They might as well have fucked on the plane. "By the time I saw him again, 7 years later, I have won my second title." Yeah, Hunt was on the grid for all of that. Did you not see him through any of that? Are you saying 7 years after he retired because you were a three-time Champion then.

And for some reason, three cars hit him in the Nurburgring crash. Only Hollywood would want extra drama in a fireball.

Uncut Gems doesn't lay a glove on Good Time, but is a must watch for Julia Fox if nothing else.

The Lighthouse is the worst thing I've ever paid to see (it was Death Proof until today). And people are raving about it, which I honestly think can only be because it's in black and white and filmed in a certain way, so they're all going mental for it being like a poncey foreign film like when they all went apeshit over that penguin documentary because they don't have David Attenborough. It's absolutely wank.

I'm now trying to think what the worst thing I've paid to see is (assuming that just means cinema.)

Possibly Batman vs. Superman. I'll need to give it some thought.

It was like a Tim Burton shit show, which automatically makes it irredeemable.

Glasses. Fucking lol. You can't be making bald jokes anymore if you can't even get your own eyes to work.

It’s probably Mad Max for me. I’m quite selective about what I see at the cinema, but that piece of shit caught me on the hop.

    I'm the same.

I felt the need to cleanse myself after watching Mission to Mars so I decided to watch Gladiator at the cinema a week later. Fortunately, it was infinitely better.

What exactly is going on in Hollywood at the moment?

Every awards show seems to have barely any diversity in their nominations, but for some reason then paid people to mock that while presenting. I see the Oscars was full of this last night too.

    https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-51441309

Either dig out the nominations and admit the academy are a bit racist or hold firm and cite that minorities really need to do better/be given more opportunities if they want to win awards (can't think of a better year to do the latter given the best picture winner), but this nominating followed by a sycophantic on stage 'apology' routine is a load of horseshit.

Yep, the holiday for me. Added bonus that I did it on Xmas eve and actually ended up stranded 15 miles from home afterwards.

    Awful film.

    The Hills Have Eyes 2.

I have no idea why the 3 of us bothered but we must have been bored. It was approaching so bad it was good IIRC, I do remember a lot of the audience laughing towards the end.

But how many are people of colour or female? That's all diversity seems to include at the moment.

The English-speaking world is still mostly white, so what sort of percentages should we be seeing? And who - taking into account what sort of stuff actually wins these things - has been stiffed on account of their colour? They spout off about it because it's a high-status opinion, and that matters more than actually putting your money where your mouth is and - for example - only working with female directors. Imagine if someone like Natalie Portman insisted on female directors being attached to any film that wanted her in it. She might lose a few decent roles and paydays, but wouldn't that do an awful lot more to boost lady film-makers than wearing a dress with their names on it?

Agree with all those points, but you know the horse has well and truly bolted when you look at the application of the first one. People aren't even citing actual films/performances now that should have been nominated and were snubbed, just that not enough women or people of colour were nominated.

I'm wondering how much value an Oscar gives a film when it comes to eyes on the product. Oscars tend to arrive after the horse has bolted.

I think it'll do wonders for Parasite. People in he know knew it was good, but people who wouldn't have otherwise heard of it will now be watching and there might even be a fair few people who'd never watch subtitled films join the party too.

It's performative, so it doesn't matter. You just have to acknowledge it and you're a Good Person. It's all very olden days religion. See also: the eco-mentalists.

So what is happening from your perspective?

I'm genuinely intrigued as this stuff fascinates me. As does the acting fraternity rapidly disappearing up their own arse holes, particularly at a time when they should really be being more careful.

The job itself is piss easy, but this shit might make it almost unbearable. Right now you can ignore it, but eventually that might not be the case. Oh well, hopefully I will benefit financially from the whole insanity.
