I didn't realise Cloud Atlas was a 2010s film. That's definitely in there for me.

It's a bit like judging a book by its cover, but that Bond trailer makes the film look rubbish.

I can understand your criticism of Gravity, I felt a little underwhelmed by it but Cloud Atlas is a cinematic masterpiece and one of the greatest films of all time. I recommend a rewatch.

I disagree but I would as I'm a massive James Bond fan. I'm very intrigued to see where they go with it and Malek should be an excellent villain. If it's half as good as Skyfall then we're in for a treat but if it's on Spectre's level then we'll be seeing a distinctly average Bond film once again.

My mind cannot cope with such wrongness. Skyfall is an amazing film and the greatest Bond film of all time. You must be confusing it with another film.

I watched it and then basically felt like "Well, that sure looks like a Bond film" and couldn't summon much enthusiasm for it beyond that.

I suppose there'll be some entertainment to be had from the internet rage about there being a BLACK FEMALE 00 because PC GONE MAD!!!

I wouldn't say anyone would mind a woman or a black woman (or man) so long as it's not Bond. At least now they can set it up for a spin-off and leave Bond alone.

It's the internet, of course there are cranks who will mind.

At this point I'm mostly curious to see what they'll do when Craig chucks it given they've leaned into continuity a lot harder with his ones.

I had forgotten Senna was this decade. That would definitely be near the top of my list despite it being a completely biased account of Senna's racing. The Social Network was excellent also despite Pepe's protestations. Two more films I love are The Missing and The Proposition but I got a feeling these are in the previous decade.

Whereas I just assume you have an attention span of a 5 year old and demand constant action in every scene.

Also stop getting Bond wrong. For a start, as I expected, you're conflating Skyfall and Spectre and Skyfall is an incredible film and you're an idiot. I avoided any spoilers before going to watch the film so Judi Dench's death was a surprise to me and quite emotional as she made a huge contribution to the Bond franchise.

Bardem was absolutely brilliant as the villain in my opinion. Bond villains are at a little bit of a disadvantage compared to villains in most films because we know James Bond isn't going to die (it's slightly different for No Time to Die as theoretically Bond could die as it's the end of Craig's reign and there's likely to be a reboot of sorts after this one). Despite this, Bardem managed to create an air of menace around him and we didn't know what he was going to do next. He benefited from some excellent dialogue throughout the film and gave an Oscar-worthy performance.

I'll happily admit that some Bond films are shite but not Skyfall.

I'm a member of quite a few Bond groups on Facebook and have already seen this outrage first hand. One of the rumours was that Bond was going to retire and his replacement as 007 was going to be a black female, similar to what you stated. I knew that Bond fans had their share of bigoted people but I didn't realise the extent of this bigotry. It would appear to be very widespread. Some of them are incapable of distinguishing between Bond and 007, which are two completely different things.

I would say that the Bond fanbase has more bigots in it than any other famous film franchise.

I possibly just quite like explosions and people punching things. It's not off the back of being a huge comic books fanboy because I don't read that many. And the ones I do like have fairly so-so adaptations.

Marvel have genuinely done a good job with their stuff and there are a few that I think are just good films in their own right.

To confirm that there are definitely films I like that don't necessarily involve people in costumes, explosions or roundhouse kicks I've had a look a couple of "of the decade lists" to remind myself what the fuck else I've seen and ones I like that appear in the list are Creed, 12 Years a Slave, Amour, Hush, Arrival, Green Room, American Hustle. That is by no means a top however many but it is films I like that don't fit into the above categories. There'll be others I've seen and entirely forgotten about.

It seems like either it wasn't a great decade for films or I missed a load of good ones, because all I can come up with is Whiplash, The Favourite, and Leviathan (the mad Russian one about building a church, not the fishing one).

Are we surprised? Bond is historically a misogynist, alcoholic homophobe who only started being moody and depressed when Craig took the role. Bond should be a torch passing thing, to be honest. With each new actor, they try something a little different.

Although it measures box office takings rather than subjective quality, I find this page interesting: https://www.filmsite.org/boxoffice2.html

In this decade's list, the number of films which is neither a sequel, nor a remake, nor part of a pre-existing franchise/series of some kind is, to the best of my estimation, zero. You could maybe argue Black Panther, but even that is in a 'universe'.

In the 2000s: 2/25 (Avatar and the Passion of the Christ)
    1990s: 18/25
    1980s: 13/20

And then prior to that it's all of them. What I take away from this is that since the millennium the industry (or the part of the industry where all the money is) has simply stopped trying, because it doesn't need to.

Yeah it's part of a set of films that are going to draw more eyes to it just for being there so even if it's not technically a sequel it might as well be one.

And this decade has been the worst for proper top notch films that I can recall as a result.

Has the number of "top notch" films actually gone down or are they just a smaller proportion of what's out because of more franchises churning stuff out?

Also where did you get to in your MCU trawl, Yev? You abandoned it?

I got to Guardians of the Galaxy 1 and other stuff just took over. Think I'll get back to it over Christmas, but it was hard going at times.

I can only think of a few 'standalone' films that I've really enjoyed from this decade. Dallas Buyers Club was fantastic. I really liked Django Unchained but I know a few people who don't rate it as highly as other Tarantino films.

I mean I like almost all of them but even I think doing them back to back as close together as you were would be a slog. Even the ones that toy a bit with other genres you're still essentially watching another chunk of the same massive continuity.
