Doesn't that make him the second most expensive defender of all time? As a 19 year old with a couple of seasons under his belt in Holland. It's a lot to pay for potential. Ajax probably can't afford to take the piss on fees like other clubs can.
Ajax set a price and stuck to it. They definitely could have got more if they'd allowed a bidding war to start, but didn't for whatever reason.

He had pretty much forced his way into the first team at the end of the 16/17 season (played in the Europa final against United), they knew they had something special on their hands but I don’t think anyone imagined the situation around him and de Jong escalating quite this quickly.
