I'm also on the Chernobyl train. It's so brilliant.

I've seen documentaries, I've read all the wikis etc about this before (you know, the way you get to doing sometimes when getting obsessed with something darkly fascinating like this), and even though I'm supposed to know how it all ends it just holds me off the edge of my seat throughout, I haven't been able to fall asleep after watching the episodes simply out of some strange excitement that instills. It's like they really manage to make you feel the tension and stress of how much is constantly at stake during those hours and how everyone just knows how bad this is but noone is really saying it.

Also, a detail is that the fact that it's all in English is not bothersome at all to me. Normally, I find it strange - like a bit cringeworthy - when someone dramatises real life events (or even just fake ones from a real era) of a non-english speaking country/setting but with all english-speaking actors, but somehow it works out fine here. It feels Russian even though it isn't.

I've finally gotten around to starting "Killing Eve", and having watched the first five episodes, I'm shocked it took me this long to watch something that I was always going to enjoy so much.

It was tricky to watch Bill and not think of The Thick Of It though.

I think Killing Eve is brilliant. It's obviously very silly, but it's so entertaining you don't really care.

I still haven't watched it, but the cast were all very enthusiastic about it at the party. Well, until I dropped the Weinstein question, which like discussing a dodgy supply teacher at a school teacher night out, didn't go down well.

Watched episode 4 of Chernobyl this morning and have to say it's the first one that didn't have me gripped all the way through. Obviously still very good, but not brilliant.

What, in your presumably twelve pints deep mind, was 'the Weinstein question'?

After years of experience being in the media spotlight she was hardly about to comment either way to a bloke she'd just met, so I ended the night none the wiser.

I thought it was excellent too. The scene on the roof was so well done - the entire thing felt like organised chaos.

Thought that bit was great, but the other narrative thread of the episode not so much. Again, still very good, just not excellent.

As an aside, the score might be the most appropriate one ever used in anything. Whenever it plays it adds an air of horror to every scene.

Just started on Chernobyl after the reviews in here. Fucking hell that was brilliant. I thought initially I would struggle to take the bloke from Friday Night Dinner seriously but he was brilliant in it.

I thought that was the best episode since the first, although the quality has been outstanding the whole way through. The dogs, the burial, the roof. Just... fuck.

Asking people to recount times they’ve been sexually assaulted is much classier. At least you can console yourself with maybe getting her to relive any bad experiences she had for your amusement.

The BBC made a pretty embarrassing error in their splash poster thing for The Planets, which I have now fixed for them:

Can't clear it's own orbit of space debris, apparently, so now it gets to hang out with the real kool kids like Makemake.

Also, Pluto only being half the size of the US came as a bit of a shock to me.

    Started Chernobyl.

I presume there are already tons of memes of a shirtless Martin from Friday Night Dinner beside the power plant, and the words “shit on it”?

Also, Ron Wheatcroft of Goodnight Sweetheart fame turning up was a personal highlight. Hard to believe he could have got much fatter, but he sure managed it.

I've just looked at the filmography of Craig Mazin, the sole writer of Chernobyl, and fuck me it's grim. Bugger knows where he's pulled this from, because everything else he's done has been deeply shit. The third and fourth Scary Movie films, the second and third Hangovers, Superhero Movie (exactly what you think it is), a sequel to fucking Snow White and The Huntsman, and Identity Thief, a film in which Melissa McCarthy steals Jason Bateman's identity. Surely nobody, in any field, has gone that suddenly from abject, embarrassing shite to work that's bordering on perfect.

I thought the fourth episode was every bit as good as what's come before.

Maybe it's a bit like how Netflix splashes a shitload of cash on Adam Sandler to make films? Like there's talent for creating something good, and talent for creating something successful, if you know what I mean? Maybe he was just finally given the chance to to the former.

I always felt the same a bit about Matthew McConaughey as well, who seemed to do shit roles as your average rom com dude in average rom coms up until he suddenly got proper serious and proper good.

McConnaughey had at least been in some good stuff before he was in all those films where usually his defining character trait was "infrequently wears a shirt."

    It really is.

I tend to measure how good things are based on how often I look at my phone whilst they're on. This holds the record. Zero times.
