Chaining uppercuts on a light character is immensely satisfying.

Subnautica is good although I already shit myself at the mere thought of a leviathan.

I've also saved a kilometre away from my starting base and no battery for the things that speed me up so unless I can find materials to start an impromptu new base with a fabricator my return trip should be interesting.

I didn't realise that RPS had plumped for Return of the Obra Dinn as their game of the year. It is, however, the correct answer.

I'm glad I never had to pick any GoTY stuff this year. In terms of the big stuff, I have reservations about God of War and Yakuza 6. And none of the indie stuff I reviewed grabbed me enough. And I played one mission of Monster Hunter before getting distracted.

On an unrelated note, I was playing FF VI this morning and I'm at a point where I need to disguise myself as a merchant. I see a merchant in a bar and batter him. Couldn't seem to progress it until, during my walk to work, the penny dropped: I'm a fucking thief with a Steal command.

Dead Cells is like a top 3-5 of all time. It was an easy year.

I picked up Battlefield 5 on the cheap. It's very pretty and I'm dogshit at it.

I've been playing the newest Forza Horizon and while the setup is silly and vaguely annoying at times (not to mention a bit short) it is extremely good fun. It's actually managed the impossible and made drifting fun, mainly because it's set here and it turns out roundabouts were actually invented for it.

This January Sale on PSN might murder my wallet. I spy Hitman for £27, Sonic Mania for £8 and Horizon for £12. Also, a freelancer we were using to get a review done over Christmas has done nothing with it. He hasn't redeemed the code so I've sniped it from under him.

I got the new Assassins Creed over Christmas. I'm determined to get on with it as I've not got on with the series before but at the same time never gave it much of a chance. So far it all feels a bit floaty, there are roughly a billion icons on screen and the map seems to be all of Greece so I'm going to Halkidiki to see if the hotel I went to in 2003 is there.

Okay, I've decided Hitman 2 is worth the punt. Downloading the levels now.

EDIT: Getting access to the season one stuff is .... fucking tedious.

I have now cleared 276 spaces of the Adventure.

The whole of the left side (although there is some on the far left shrouded by cloud) bar two 4* spirits. Pauline and The Boss.

Pauline is on the DK/Jumpman stage, I'm able to KO everyone bar Peach who starts running but my character (Little Mac) can't jump for shit and ends up falling off. With The Boss, I have tried putting poison floor immunity on but then I'm not powerful enough to win. If I keep my regular set up (3 punching/physical spirits) then I get one/two good hits in and almost beat her but the poison kills me.

Apparently the Peach/Pauline fight that was taking years off my life earlier is one of the hardest fights in the whole mode.

    It's genuinely horrible.

Subnautica isn't the most noticeably enthralling game (when you're not being attacked by giant sea bastards, anyway) and yet it steals away my time by the hour and I scarcely notice.

"What did you achieve in that hour and a half of Subnautica?"
"Well I got a load of blueprints that need materials I don't even know where to find or how to make yet, I potted some Bulbo trees in my base, spent ages looking for sandstone outcrops to find some silver and charged up all my spare batteries. It was.... pretty sweet."

Final Fantasy VI is pretty good. I'm coming up to the opera bit which I thought was a later thing. Splitting teams constantly's a little annoying, though. I don't want to leave anyone behind in levels.

The Eternal Castle: Remastered looks incredible. I can't finds any footage of the original to compare it against. It can't have looked like this in 1987 surely?

Blood Money / Absolution on the PS4 is such a chalk and cheese thing. Absolution looks great but the reliance on instinct makes things kinda restrictive. Meanwhile Blood Money holds up in gameplay but it's always looked kinda plain.

I bought a Playstation Classic the other day. It's amazing how quickly the nostalgia is replaced by disbelief at how primitive some of those games are. Battle Arena Toshinden was one of my favourite games when I was young, but it's fucking unplayable. Metal Gear Solid and Final Fantasy 7 make the purchase worthwhile, but I was looking forward to revisiting a few things on there that are abysmal so overall it's a disappointment.

That's a point, actually. A few of the games definitely aren't 'classics' of the kind you'd expect to be included on this sort of thing. Cool Boarders 2? I mean, that was crap the first time around. I'd never heard of Mr Driller until I flicked past it on my way to Syphon Filter, another brutally disappointing game.

What they need to do is release a PS2 one of these. It's old enough to get the nostalgia pound, but recent enough that most of the games will actually be worth playing.

That's what put me off the PS1 classic whereas I couldn't wait to get the SNES, the early 3D games really don't age too well. Saying that I'd be all in on an N64 classic provided it can be hacked as easy.

Of the PS Classic games, Persona's the only one I really look at with envy. Mainly just to see what that series was before it became styled as fuck. That and Wild Arms which I can grab on the store already. I'd grab the SNES for a reasonable price because I never Nintendoed before the Gamecube.

I'm sure there's roster hacks available. The Acclaim PSX ones were rough. The only redeeming qualities were the FMV, crowd chants and the groans of the wrestlers.

I remember running to all the 2nd hand shops around Liverpool to try and find WM2000 when I was a young 'un. Eventually found it in one of the remotest ones to be told by the guy at the desk it was like Goldust.

Looking back I'm not sure he wasn't making a really shit pun, but that's still the best wresting game there's been for me.

They were all classics that haven't been topped.

Used to spend most of my weekend playing First Blood Royal Rumble matches (genuinely amazing and they need to bring those back) with 3 friends.

Yeah, I was never keen on the N64's look. There's no draw distance to anything and the texture work is basic and muddy.

Thieving git. Nice wrench action, best non-lethal weapon in the game.

There is an ending once you take the four(?) strongholds but it's waaaay too long if you want to clear the entire map.
