Personally think we did the right thing yesterday. Rested all the key players, gave a few a run out and we've ended up in the easier side of the draw.
Columbia (hopefully without Rodriguez), Switzerland and Spain is a far easier run to the final than say Japan, Brazil and France.
In an ideal world we get to the semis without any 120 minute / penalty games and potentially go into the final rounds fresh after resting so many last night.

I really don't think Southgate was trying to plot his way through the group, I think he genuinely wanted to rest the players and give the rest of the squad a game.
Playing Thursday and then potentially Monday is a short turnaround. Totally reasonable decision in my eyes.
