One of my favourites is Jennifer Pan - give that one a go Ian, but do yourself a favour and don't look up anything about the cases before you listen to them.

I really enjoyed the Silk Road series as I knew very little about it.
Team 33 is a decent soccer and worth a listen. It's part of the Off the Ball setup but had different presenters and does a few more interesting feature type shows rather than current news or match reports.
So am I just starting from the beginning or trying that one first as a good indicator of whether it's for me or not?
I would try that one first. You can watch them in any order, and the first few aren't as good in my opinion.

absolutely, i used to listen to football weekly, football weekly extra, football ramble and the football ramble preview almost every week, as well as world football phone in. i don't think i've listened to one through choice for about 2 years.
in fairness though i mostly listened to them when i was unemployed or "working from home", and i think just listening to people jovially chatting was a way to combat my insanity and loneliness - at the peak of my footy podcast habits i rarely watched anything but match of the day and west brom games.
Im really enjoying Cum Town and Chapo Trap House at the moment.
With spending so much of my days in a car, I've nothing else.

Podcasts in general are brilliant (although I've never got into this 'true crime' stuff that seems to be at the vanguard of the genre). I listen to too few if anything because my commute in the car is too short.
They're not for me either. Tried a few but just don't be interested.
I've now ploughed through the Hardcore History series on WW1 and Persia, both very good if somewhat long winded in places.
His 'short' (just 5 or 6 hours) one shot episodes on nuclear weapons and public executions are also worth a go.
(not) Interestingly, Hardcore History is just about the only podcast series I can remember not getting into. I even got a bit of joy out of the fucking abysmal Times footy one for a bit. I think being too cheap to pay for them and having to faff around on soulseek downloading the episodes and putting them on my crap old mp3 player soured me from the start. Also I was doing the weirdest temp job going through ancient personnel files in a virtually abandoned section of a big industrial site with this fit 20 year old and it was more fun to piss about and flirt with her than listen to some history NERD on my headphones.
I wouldn't blame you, it can be quite dry at times and (as he is at pains to point out) he's not a historian so he doesn't tend to draw any conclusions. I'm lucky in that most of the recent episodes have been on things I'm already interested in which has to help.
The Tony Dorigo episode on Quickly Kevin was good, even though the man in question was almost entirely before my time. Are the earlier seasons of a similar quality?

Dorigo was a lot funnier than I imagined he would be. I really enjoyed it. I would recommend going back to earlier seasons. The ones where they watch various documentaries, or spend an hour tearing Steve Bruce's books apart have been highlights for me.
About halfway through the Jennifer Pan casefile episode and quite liking it. I thought the narrator's voice was going to annoy me but I like that he's quite understated.

One of the things I love about Casefile is that the narrator doesn't offer opinions or theories - he just reports the facts.
I'll give that one a go tonight. I listened to the first episode and couldn't get past the narrator's voice, I had to make an effort to understand what he was saying which I couldn't be bothered with.

New York Times have started a podcast about the inner workings of ISIS. The episodes released so far have nibbled around the edges and I'm not sure about the structure of certain pieces within it, but it's engaging enough and if it does what it's setting out to do it'll be required listening by the end.
It's called 'Caliphate'. There are three episodes out so far but the first is just a preview of sorts, featuring an ISIS man speaking disconcertingly frankly about what he got up to.
On the first (proper) episode. Interesting shit, but the American bloke she keeps chatting to is annoying to the point that he may ruin it for me. Hopefully he fucks off and she goes it alone.

I’d go from the start, but I particularly enjoyed the East Area Rapist one (especially now it’s got a conclusion), Jones Town and The Silk Road.
The production values are a bit crap on the first few, but they're still good. There aren't many bad episodes at all - when I started, I just picked ones based on their length and how long I had to listen.

I was in need of an American Sports podcast and Chapo had on some sports guy they referred to only as PFT. He was mildly entertaining so I thought I'd check it out and downloaded a couple of episodes of 'Pardon My Take' and it's very good.
There's a few here listen to Second Captains still I think. They're doing their usual weekend show for the summer on RTÉ Radio 1 so search Second Captains Saturday for the feed as it doesn't show up on the normal one.
Actually managed to get SC tickets today for the premier league preview thing in the Liberty Hall, free and all. They're usually near impossible to pick up.
