Can only echo the mehs for Spectre. It ticked all the Bond boxes, including the new 'reference old Bond films' box. It has some decent set pieces and looks pretty good but the whole thing just felt a bit stale. Christoph Waltz was massively underused and the ending was a bit lame.

Yeah, Waltz/his role was a bit crap. And the ending was lame enough that I thought that couldn't actually be it but it was. I kind of felt like it never really got properly going. There were a few big chases and that was about it for the action.

Spectre was more of the same. Great opening sequence, some other decent action stuff, but the plot was a mess which served only the purpose of moving between the setpieces.
Both Spectre and Blofeld managed to be both virtually omnipotent and laughably incompetent as was required to keep things moving.

Yeah, that was fucking stupid. The theme song is absolutely terrible as well.

Generally thought it was pretty good though.

Just saw Spectre. I go along with the thoughts in here; it's good, there're some fun scenes in between filler. I'd hyped the opening sequence up a bit too much, turns out I didn't like it as much as Skyfall's.

I think it ranks 3rd in Daniel Craig Bonds for me. Above Quantum and below the other two.

I’m currently watching The Salvation, which appears to be a modern take on a good old fashioned European spaghetti western, except with Scandinavians instead of Italians. A Surströmming Western, if you will.

It’s got Mads Mikkelsen and Eva Green (playing a mute, which is a waste), but beyond that it’s a bunch of fairly rubbish European TV actors doing not particularly convincing American drawls. The sheriff is one of those horribly generic British actors who is in things on ITV, for example. Clearly they must have felt they needed to add some spice to this mix to get people to go see it, so what they’ve done is...cast Eric Cantona as the villain’s henchman.

He’s got third billing after Mads and Eva, and yet he basically in the film in the same way a lampshade or some other inanimate object is. He’s in it quite a lot, in that they keep starting scenes in wide shots where Eric is in the corner staring at the camera, before zooming straight past him to the people actually involved in the film. I’m fifty minutes in now, and he’s appeared about fifteen times and not said a word, or even had a close up. It's top quality audience trolling.

I’m not terribly interested in it as a film, but as the world’s first (and presumably only) western themed Where’s Wally But With Eric Cantona thingy, it’s a fucking marvel.

I've yet to be treated to that if it is this one.

He's just had a line though (well, four words) nearly an hour in! Followed swiftly by him buggering back off into the corner of the next shot, and then following that up by standing in the corner of a traditional 'and now it's starting to rain' outdoor establishing shot.

How he's not received Oscar buzz for this I'll never know.

It was so bad that I kept telling myself it can't be that bad. I don't remember Olympus Has Fallen being as bad, considering they're much the same film.

Olympus Has Fallen is half the film that one is. Simply by not taking itself seriously, it achieved what it needed to.

They came out roughly around the same time as well , didn't they? Odd. I'm sure I've noticed that before a few times as well, films that seem very similar coming out close(ish) to each other but I can't remember any examples of it now.

I've seen one of those but I'm not even sure which one. Ah, it's Olympus Has Fallen. I thought it was alright, as cheesy action films go besides some ropey CGI. Is the other one better?

One is technically a comedy, while the other is SERIOUS BUSINESS which was my issue.

There are loads of double film projects, they're called Twin Films, normally coming from 2 competing studios greenlighting something on the back of something else getting greenlighted. There were 3 Zodiac movies released in 2007 but you only remember one for isntance. The Prestige and the other magic film no-one remembers being another good example.

Slightly surprised to say I really enjoyed Life of Pi this evening. I didn't know the story well, other than it being a boy and a tiger in a boat, so it was all new to me. The first 30 minutes of scene-setting was rather dull, but it got progressively better from the moment the actual story began. I enjoy films that leave it up to the viewer to decide what actually happened.

That 'Twin Film' things happens with TV projects too. It's far more common there for three channels to order pilots and only one of them to actually go into production, but occasionally two or more will make it through.

The most recent example I can think of is a couple of years ago, with two shows based on the idea that fairy tales are actually historical documents premiering within a week of eachother.

Dog Day Afternoon is a tad overrated. Good performance by Pacino, and it starts well, but it gets a bit stolid and boring.

They're both Michael Haneke films, he did a US remake of the original. His own original.

I've only seen the US one, which I quite liked (albeit I could see why others might hate it). DS has seen both IIRC and reckoned the original was better.

I'd be curious to hear what you think.

La Battaile d'Alger (come at my French) was pretty good, I thought when I watched it. Hard to tell how much of that was just being in love with all the Algiers backstreets.

You can't really say that one film is 'better', because it's a shot-for-shot remake, but I think the fact that the original is in some loser language I don't speak (German I think) and doesn't have well-known actors in gives it more of a sense of whatever it's trying to achieve. It's not that good really.

It's not really a film (or at least I could see how people might think it isn't), as it only serves to make the viewer feel as uncomfortable as possible.

I quite like feeling like that when watching a film though, so it worked for me.

I haven't seen the remake but I can't see Michael fucking Pitt successfully pulling off that initial soft spoken menace I remember from the original.

I like to feel unsettled in a film too, but at a certain point I thought Funny Games went over a line from making me feel uncomfortable to being actively disdainful of me for continuing to watch. I enjoy that rather less.

I've seen The English Patient, but can't for the life of me remember what I thought of it or anything about it even.

Which I guess suggests it's at best not brilliant and at worst, monumentally dull.

Yeah it is, checked PTP, I'd rated it (75%) and the trailer refreshed my memory. Its a bit wonky in places, and a tad overlong but its worth the time.

And aye, Man From Nowhere has become a yearly watch, incredible film.

It probably will which is so fucking shit, although one would hope that if they did that they'd put a higher rated cut out on Blu-ray later on.

Suicide Squad looked like it might be alright, but they're pushing the Joker/Harley Quinn angle so much that I'm beginning to doubt it.

I'd rather it just be a bunch of nobodies with the same fundamental conceit.
