    A Dark Song

Tale of a woman hiring a guy to do a ritual so as to contact her dead son. Essentially two people locked in a house throughout, its really well done. Two superb leading performances, enough feeling of uncertainty to make you question the whole thing, which is however left with horror's greatest modern problem in that the ending is weak. Not terrible, just weak. Worth a watch, Steve Oram is superb again.

    The Blackcoat's Daughter

Two girls left behind at their boarding school over winter and things go off. Really loved this, Kiernan Shipka is fantastically creepy and the plot is done to perfection in that it doesn't really tell anything, but there's enough there to make it believable. Real good atmosphere throughout.

Pretty gutted to have missed on the new page here. Getting it nailed at the 3,000 posts mark would have been something to put on the CV

I saw GOTG 2 earlier today. It takes itself a bit more seriously than the first which makes it an all round better film.

When I went to see Fast, they had an ad for the new Aliens movie that I didn't know they were making. The whole time I was thinking 'Wow this looks like a shit version of Prometheus' Ridley Scott really is up for destroying his entire legacy isn't he?

Donnie Brasco is yet another generic gangster movie.

Al Pacino appears to have been in them all.

What's happening with Hollywood and North-East locations? Not content with grabbing Clayton Street for Fast and Furious, they've now locked down Durham Castle for the Avengers.

The pound collapsing and the North being a respective third world means they can pay robert downey jr a billion dollars and still come out in the black.

I'm still wishing Adam Sandler bought a house up here. I hate the guy but the idea of worming my way into his inner circle, him thinking I was funny and then casting me in his films would've been a sure-fire way to millions of ill-gotten gains.

Watched a few things on Netflix recently.

One in a Billion was relatively interesting about the spread of the NBA into India via an absolute monster who's pretty shit at basketball.

Also, The seven five which was a documentary about corruption in the NY police department. Really enjoyed it.

There appears to be fuck all out at the moment that's worth watching. Anyone got a recommendation for tomorrow evening?

    Seems my options are:
Gaurdians of the Galaxy 2. More marvel shite.
Fast & Furious 8. Sub Michael Bay shite.
Their Finest. Good reviews but seems a bit tame. I'd prefer something edgier.
Sleepless & Unlocked. Both looked like promising if generic action stuff but have awful reviews.

Am I wrong? I'm probably open to seeing it given the above. Firstly, can I just walk in and watch it without seeing the other seven? Secondly, is it just going to put me to sleep because it's about explosions and nothing else?

You'd be better off having seen 5 and 6. It loses something when you don't know 'the family'.

I don't go for all the endless comic book films but I loved the first GOTG, I wouldn't count it as more of the same if that helps at all.

Well, I went to GotG2 and it was shit.

I'm trying to define what it is about the Marvel series that I don't like. The plots are centred around a series of maguffins so we don't give a shit about those. But then there's also never any actual danger to the characters, so it;'s hard to give a fuck about them either so there's no tension. The action sequences require you to have, or attempt to induce ADHD. Far too much busy, ugly shit. No grace and no focus.
Come to think of it, all of this is probably what's wrong with comic books too.

Arrival was shit hot. Tree of Life was embarrassing, incoherent nonsense though, so you're still coming out just about ahead on that jab.

I can't speak to GOTG2, but the first one was basically Star Wars with more jokes.

Very surprised you enjoyed Arrival. I found it very weak, flimsy plot, terrible character development and a really weak ending.

Weak, flimsy and very weak are all but the same. What a critique Adamski just gave.
I found his critique to be feeble, frail around the edges and a bit decrepit.

Decrepit doesn't mean anywhere near the same as feeble/frail.

    Thanks for playing though, champ.

Decrepit is essentially just a more specific version of both those words.

That's what I mean, it's not an interchangeable word for feeble/frail, it's more descriptive.

I'd link decrepit to a building or inanimate object whereas feeble/frail (i.e. Randrew) would be a person.

I actually meant it in that I found his critique to be old. He has a habit of going against the majority for the sake of going against the majority and its a tired act hence decrepit.

I dont think it actually mattered what film it was. If others liked it he wouldnt.

It's untrue to say that it 'doesn't mean anywhere near the same' as those.

True story but if you just google 'shite' then the answer is staring you in the face.

"The word shite may refer to: A variation of shit, especially in Ireland and in Scotland."

    Can't believe I'm playing but it's lunchtime

Similar yes, not the same. The exaggeration of it being nowhere near the same was incorrect, but they aren't the same word and don't have the exact same meaning.

    What exactly is the difference?

Other than you 'feel like' one is more buildingy and one it more peopley (which is demonstrably wrong).

On the subject of frailty, weakness, and decrepitude I think we can all defer to RL.
