I was impressed with how he started at Everton, but I was never a fan of him at Wigan and thought it was laughable he was being linked with the jobs he was having flirted with relegation every season before ultimately actually relegating them.
As far as I could see it was because his Wigan team played 'nice' football, which presumably negated his shocking inability to organise a defence in the eyes of his advocates.
He might well have been, but we'll never know now given the astonishingly shit appointment of Martinez.
It was that he was keeping Wigan up whilst playing good football, which still has to go down as a good job when you see what's happened to that club since. Won the cup as well, remember. I thought he'd do well at a bigger club with more resources. And I thought with better players at his disposal it would be easier to organise a defence. He clearly isn't capable, or even interested in doing so.
I'm hearing a lot of this. FSG have always claimed they aren't in it for the money, but they're an investment group at heart so for the right price they'll piss off.

Oh I understand the arguments in favour of him and he did a good job with Wigan, there's no doubt about that. It was only a good job mind, with the FA Cup win glossing over the fact that in the league there was absolutely no progress year on year, with embarrassing tonkings occuring all to regularly from his first premier league game to the last.
It was ultimately the same as with Moyes, in that I saw nothing in the way he approached managing his side that suggested he could cope with a big step up.
