It's easier to teach them to retrieve than ignore but you could certainly stop it digging like that. Murdering the voles would be easiest but there are downsides associated with that.

What’s a vole? Also, who’ll know if you kill them?

Like a small mouse. Nobody (else) would know but you'd either not get rid of them all, something else would only take their place and the dog would still dig half the garden up anyway. Easier to train the dog than be forever gassing half the garden.

Are voles a proper pest? Like do they they burrow into the lawn, etc.?

They do, you get collapsed tunnel networks and lumpy areas but it's rare to get that many, especially in a town/city garden. You can fuck about with sonic deterrents (which don't really work) but you're better off with a cat and keeping your lawn nice and dry and without too much cover from foliage.

There you go, vole news for the day.

Can confirm they burrow the fuck out of the lawn and the tunnels collapse. We live in the countryside and back onto a field.

Never heard of them before. I wonder are they what we call a shrew. Do they have a tail?

Do you get Google in Ireland?

Similar size to a shrew but without the long nose, they look like mice or a small hamster.

Apparently they're related to hamsters and lemmings. Learning a lot about voles today.

That I was doing. But I was doing vaccine prescribing today and I don't think they'd accounted for how much quicker it would be for second dosers so there was some down time.

My cat woke the house up doing that dreaded “I’ve got you a present” yowl that cats do. At first I was amused but then I remembered the conservatory window had been left open as a bouncy castle had been plugged in through it and she was inside.

Unfortunately by the time I came to this conclusion and the panic meant I mustered the energy to get out of bed and locate the cat, she was downstairs in the living room purring away and it was either a ‘I’ve brought you something but left it outside’ yowl, which is unlikely, so much more likely to have been a ‘I’ve brought you somethi- oh it’s ran off, and now I’ve forgot about it’ one and basically a mouse now probably lives in my house.

My dickhead cat did me over yesterday, I was half watching Vigil whilst lounging on the sofa post-kebab, browsing my phone when I saw something out of the corner of my eye. A massive spider, tis the season after all. But when I got up to deal with it the greedy twat cat thought he might be getting something out of my sudden movement and scared the spider into hiding. 15 traumatic minutes later I think the bastard was killed but couldn't prove it to my satisfaction.

She brought another mouse in last night and it’s still in the conservatory. Came down this morning and it was just milling around the window ledge. Problem is it’s my daughters playroom so full of stuff for it to hide in and behind. Cat is absolutely bloody useless too, almost like she instantly forgot about it. I literally threw her at it this morning and she just made that weird little ‘wtf’ sound and just looked at me for strokes while the mouse shot off behind a bookcase.

Well I’ve emptied the entire playroom and it’s nowhere to be seen.

Presumably it’s cowering in one of the toy boxes that I’ve lined up on the lawn.

One saving grace I’ve managed to give it a good mop and cleaned all the windows/sills and we’re gonna thin out the toys/books before putting everything back and hopefully find the mouse.

Ah man. Got a FB message from one of my mum's mates last night saying she couldn't get hold of her. I just assumed she meant that my mum was being typically flakey but then she was like "is Luna at home?", Luna being our cat. Mum's mate also does the cat protection stuff locally so I was like, ah shit, this isn't good news is it?

Poor thing got hit by a car, though don't think she suffered much (hopefully), as she was pretty unmangled. I assume she just got smacked in the head and that was that.

It's sad obviously, and it was a bit shit setting my alarm for 4am to tell my mum when she got up for work then going back to bed, then having a fucking dream she came back home and was okay, dick move from my brain really. She was nearly ten, and had fucking asthma like what cat gets diagnosed with asthma, and it had gotten much worse recently so like, sort of for the best. Ish.

Laters Luna mate, I will always remember the way you always attacked any woman I ever had visit the house, especially my mate Sarah who she practically brutalised, and the way she would sit on my mum's dresser and fish all the socks onto the floor like a proper wind up merchant and the way she would hear the butter being opened from the opposite end of the house and not shut the fuck up until you gave her some.

Okay that's enough being a sad twat, though at least I didn't take a day off work like my uncle has for all of his, bless him.

Pets going is crap, not only for its own sake but because it puts you in reflect mode about what you have or haven't done in the course of the wee thing's lifespan. Nobody wants to be in reflect mode, especially not the day after the clocks go back.
