There's some people saying that both Rooney Mara and Alicia Vikander really ought to have been put in the Best Actress category, but both were adjudged to be a better chance of winning in the Supporting Actress category.

This is some very interesting momentum. George MIller might have some work to do at the pointy end of the program if it carries on. Best Visual Effects will be an interesting bellwether; if Mad Max beats out Star Wars, it suggests that the film polled unexpectedly well with the voters. Although The Revenant picking up Best Original Screenplay is probably a bigger indicator of the final big awards of the night.

Yep. There has to come a time when you take so many of the technical awards you can't help but be best director.

No fucking idea how Ex Machina's won that though mind.

Woah. I was fully expecting Star Wars to get the nod there. Although the voters may be saving it all up in case they get to pull a Return of the King in two years time.

I thought Spotlight won Best Original Screenplay?

Ennio Morricone winning Best Score is fantastic, and goodness knows he deserved to win something at some stage.

Sam Smith winning Best Song for that insipid attempt at a Bond song is less fantastic. I would've liked to see Lady Gaga win it, to be honest. She's got serious talent under all the pageantry.

Inarittu having a dig at a racial equality is a tad off. The Revenant you can excuse given them period, however, of the 18 'main' cast in Birdman, 0 were black. The Academy cannot nominate if the actors aren't given roles.

I watched Spotlight on the back of its success last night. Good film but if that's the best of the year it's been a shit year. I'd score it a 7.5 or an 8, myself.

There are a few films I've yet to see - including that - but it does seem to have been a relatively poor year, yes.

Agreed. Good film, but surprised to see it given as the best of the year. Something very cool about films set in Boston (obviously not the abuse...).

    Room was the best film.

Did they really end the show with fucking 'Fight The Power' playing?

Carol and Bridge of Spies were both great films, though neither really innovative in any way, but other than that is does seem pretty thin.

Laura Kim, of Participant Media, which produced the film, had just taken Phil Saviano, a survivor of clergy abuse whose story is depicted in “Spotlight,” to the emergency room. Before the Oscars, Mr. Saviano had suffered a blood clot that required he be hospitalized, but, against medical advice, had checked himself out to attend the ceremony, and afterward checked himself back in (reportedly he was faring well).
    That's pretty bad-ass.
