Wikipedia says 412,000 people employed by it. Sounds like basically the NHS and DWP rolled into one but only for veterans.

People pay a lot of money to make sure the people who collect taxes can’t collect them. I can’t find the article anymore but basically you’re way more likely to get audited dodging a couple of grand in taxes earning 50k then you are dodging a couple hundred thousand earning several million because they’re purposely understaffed to be able to chase such cases.
The pentagon has just failed its 7th audit in a row because they are unable to account for the where the majority of the 825 billion dollars they receive a year has gone.
