I know there's no reason for darts players to be in particularly good shape, but I've always been surprised by quite how massive so many of them are.

It’s mad watching some of these late 90’s finals, you could hear a pin drop while the players throw. Phil Taylor just missed the 8th dart in a 9 dart attempt and was applauded - these days they’re booed if they miss the 4th.
Was it a gradual thing or was there some year/change/decision that brought in the scummer ladbanter element in the crowd. Does it align with when/why it became fancy dress?

@Giggles I went to Ally Pally last week (my first time there). It's exactly as you describe it.
We weren't in fancy dress and were the minority. The purpose of the evening is to get as wankered as possible and chant/sing at either the table punters against the stand (cheaper) punters, or 'banter' the darts players, especially as one of them was German.
It wasn't great.
It used to be up there in the list of sporting events I’d love to have gone to, right back from the Lakeside days to the heights of the Taylor era. But yeah it just looks like a shite place to spend a few days now.

They also make you put money on a venue payment card. They claim this is to make transactions faster at the bars (which is bollocks), but the reality is that they hope most punters leave a few unspent quid on them and they take the profit.
