That was one aspect of ME that was slightly disappointing, the arsehole path options weren't a patch on previous Bioware offerings.

Yeah it was very much "You're going to be the hero either way, it's just whether you're a bit of an arse about it or not."

Of Andromeda's many flaws I'd have probably forgiven it a fair bit of the character you played as was more of a blank slate.

I finished up Outer Worlds and I'd say my previous thoughts held true that it's perhaps less than the sum of its parts. I like almost everything individually but there's nothing that stopped it leaving me a little cold, and it does feel like you mooch about a bit early doors and then suddenly sprint to the finish unless that's just the way I played it. I think it can be a little guilty of stealth, hacking, lockpicking etc. just being a means of getting by stuff easier rather than it providing a different twist on content. That said the Dishonored games could be a little guilty of that (more so the original) and I love those so that alone isn't the issue.

There are also a few quests later in the game that felt like they should've led to something bigger, specifically the Early Retirement Lottery. It's a good solid 7/10 game that I wish had been more than it was.

    Next up: A Plague Tale.

I like A Plague Tale so far. I just assumed the kid brother was gonna be a total irritant but he and the relationship to the main character are well written. I'll be interested to see how far it leans into the the most mystical/magic-y side it's hinting at.

I'm also interested to see if it mixes up the gameplay or just changes up the sort of environments you're making your way through. There are some slightly contrived things when it comes to keeping light going or about your person but most stealth games have a bit of that so fingers crossed they don't become annoying.

Using the 360 for the first time in what feels like a year to Play Gears of War. In the cold light of 2020, that game is a bit one-dimensional. It's encounter, break, encounter, walk and talk, encounter all the way. Everyone is too big for the cover they hide behind which I find oddly charming. On the plus side, my MadCatz 360 pad works enough to play it. I think my wireless pad is borked. And fuck the 360 for demanding I sign into Xbox Live to play a single player game.

I finished Plague Tale which rather traditionally decides to end with an absolute garbage boss fight, expecting you to do things you haven't really done prior and not explaining properly what they are. But whatever, it's easy once you figure it out and it's the only blemish I found on a game I otherwise really enjoyed. A game managing to be mostly escort mission and featuring a five year old as one of the two main characters and not being the most annoying game going is some feat. I liked it very much.

Ori and the Blind Forest next, I think.

Been playing Watch Dogs: Legion over the last few days. It's pretty fun overall with some decent mechanics. It's not even that stuffed with icon-hunting. Plus there's lots of swearing

Mostly I just love the setting and being able to drive my old commuter journey in a stolen sports car rather than do it IRL, plus visit my old haunts.

I've finished Ori and the Blind Forest. Excellent stuff though it has a couple of bits where it's suddenly going much more Super Meat Boy-esque precision platformer with no checkpointing and while I liked Super Meat Boy having bits where you're having to repeat the same 20 seconds repeatedly and progress in increments because either the game hits you with something you couldn't have anticipated or you just can't figure out what to do within the time limit is annoying in a game that hasn't been having you do that previously. Still, that's my only gripe. Otherwise it's entirely lovely.

    Torment: Tides of Numenera next.

As spotted by Andy Borjas, Watch Dogs: Legion recruitment system's absolute worst occupation and backstory combo is a pediatrician who engages in inappropriate relationships with their minor patients. Upon being analyzed by the current player character's phone, randomized Shannon Dickey is exposed as a doctor that recently "ended [her] personal relationship with [a] patient."

    Well done, Ubisoft.

As expected this is very Planescape-y so far. It's possibly being a bit too wordy and cold in the presentation of its world but it is an interesting world and set of characters from the small sample size so far.

EDIT: Also waking up plummeting to the ground from kilometres up in the air is a bracing start and does a good job of working character creation into that. I like the 'effort' thing too where you can commit points from three skill pools into a certain activity or conversation option to increase the chance of succeeding.

New ME game announced too. I wish I would still be excited by that news. A load of people wetting their pants because Casey Hudson is back on board but I'm pretty sure the rest of that team has scattered.

I would quite like them to add some stuff to these remasters. Like the ability to not have to use the Mako or scan any planets.

She's probably right, assuming they've put any thought into the image, that probably is an Angara. I'm not against them going for the same setting but please given me something more interesting to be doing than fighting the same Kett boss fight umpteen times. I'd also like to not be playing as Ryder but I suspect that's hoping for too much.

I mean I guess if it's still a good game then it's still a good game but I don't understand the thinking of just casting aside the whole aesthetic when you're remaking a game.

I enjoyed it enough to finish it and I've neither ever been a FPS fiend or really care about a game looking pretty if the gameplay's shite but maybe the story appealed to me and that's what got me through.

Either way, if that's the issue then you just don't remake the game.

I am enjoying Torment: Tides of Numenera quite a lot. If you like the option to do RPGs as quite talky things then this is very much in this vein, as it's spiritual predecessor Planescape: Torment was. There are a lot of side quests it chucks at you early doors in the way that RPGs will have you suddenly helping random strangers having just arrived as a stranger (in the case of this game you've literally fallen out of the sky from an exploding moon.) But I think it gets away with it better because a) people are actively taking an interest in your arrival in this world and trying to help you work out what happened to you and b) a lot of the side-quests are tied in to your character's origin/backstory in a way that it makes [B]sense[B] for you to be taking an interest and depending how interactions pan out NPCs and quests are sort of forced upon you.

The combat is a little wonky but I've not had much of it yet and you can mostly deal with those encounters in different ways from what I've seen so far.

    Oh dear.

This looks very bad indeed. Further to the odd decision to change away from the cel shading to ape the look of the comic they HAVE kept some of the panels, speech bubbles, 'AAAAaaaaaaaa's following characters as they fall off cliffs, etc. so they've kept some of the other comic-y aspects. Very weird.

Finished Tides of Numenera. I liked it very much. It's nice when your decisions in a game actually make a difference to the outcome even in a small way. It's probably too easy to load up on Int and Persuasion to get through everything but it's well written enough that I really don't care.

Onto the in-need-of-a-catchier-title now, Druidstone: The Secret of the Menhir Forest. It's a fantasy turn-based tactical thing. Fun so far and funnier than I expected it to be. Albeit in a "Heh" sort of a way rather than outright lols.

Yeah, that's good news that it's been given to IO. I assume it'll have more out and out action than Hitman (not counting Absolution ) games tend to so it'll be interesting to see how they do it.

Now that I think of it, just how did they land the license? They fly solo these days and that can't have been cheap. Hitman must've sold gangbusters to pull that. Hitman Absolution but with James Bond. That's the only way I see it in terms of structure.

Playing the original Demon's Souls and two big things happened for me. I beat Vanguard in the tutorial and used the Crescent Falchion for the first time. Overpowered. I love it.

Barely anybody's done anything of note with the Bond license. Maybe it was available, they pitched for it and whoever owns it (Eon?) said they could do it. The recent two Hitman games did pretty well didn't they?

It makes perfect sense if you can somehow tie the action side of things together with their already built clockwork level design. Just instead of dressing up as a large chicken to kill someone you’re using it to access a safe with your laser watch.

Yeah, the reason that was 'barely anybody' rather than 'nobody'.

My recollection of any others have been them getting at best swathes of 6/10 reviews.

Syphon Filter was quality. Can't believe no one's rebooted that.

I'd buy it but the Playstation is basically Solid Snake's town. When I played Syphon Filter a few months back, I kept seeing it as a non-licensed Bond game. Diffusing bombs underneath a bridge, stealthing out of a military base, stealthing INTO a military base, running on top of trains, etc. All shit Bond would do.

In other news, that Sekiro patch came out that adds boss rushes, costumes and the Dark Souls messaging/ghosts. I'm tempted to get back on that.
