    Breaking news: planet saved

We haven't really talked about this much, but the Paris Conference has led to a landmark climate change agreement: http://www.nytimes.com/2015/12/13/wo...aris.html?_r=0

I have to admit that I'm surprised, I didn't think they would reach one. It's heartening to see.

Fox News are already seething about it, so I assume it's a bit of a deal. Surprised they managed to make it legally-binding.

I think it might. It's something they've been trying to do for the past 20 years and failed every time.

On every report I've seen, some talking head has spoken about how this is actually progress and not just political dick-waving.

If the planet wasn't going to die before I'm due to then there was no problem. So for me, shit like this is a bad thing.

If that were the case, shouldn't the agreement have also included how they were going to achieve the points below, rather than just the points themselves:

    Key points
The measures in the agreement included:
    • To peak greenhouse gas emissions as soon as possible and achieve a balance between sources and sinks of greenhouse gases in the second half of this century
    • To keep global temperature increase "well below" 2C (3.6F) and to pursue efforts to limit it to 1.5C
    • To review progress every five years
    • $100 billion a year in climate finance for developing countries by 2020, with a commitment to further finance in the future.

I would be excited if history didn't show that while we're good at signing agreements, we're really shit at actually doing what is claimed. Haven't looked at it in detail though, will get back to you once I have.

That sounds a bit too much like last year's China-US agreement, which was complete bollocks.

I just don't see China giving a fuck, and then India/Brazil will kick on and make the whole problem worse as they develop.

Brazil is already developed. Also, most of their energy comes from hydro and they are big into biofuels.

India are probably already about as developed as they're ever going to be. Peak India was when they interrupted an IPL game to announce that the first Indian rocket had begun orbiting Mars. They hate their own poor and have enough internal racism to make the US look like Teletubbieland.

Aren't biofuels just as much of an environmental disaster as fossil fuels?

IIRC, I think it's something like they're 86% as bad and you need to spend fossil fuels to create them so it's all rather moot.

Forty-one tweets per follower gained. Mahow has probably attracted more new TTHers.

Early generation ones are/were and there is a good chance that they will never be that good, but still probably better than coal and co.

Also lol at 'peak by x' promises. If you don't set a limit on that peak it just incentivizes overbuilding your fossil fuel output, so once x rolls in you can claim to be cutting your emissions by just reducing from your excess.

The first 5 year review of this must be coming up soon?

Bonus points for the first person to work out why/how I ended up in this thread.
