It was worse than that, Ian: https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/q...-out-pwq86wl0k

Mike Selvey (whose cricket knowledge I respect more than almost anyone, and who interviewed for the chief selector role eventually given to Ed Smith) has been on the anti-Vince train from the very beginning, saying that a pretty cover drive does not a batsman make.

Oh Jesus I was so busy looking at the "bin Burns for Denly" bit I didn't even see that. Fucking hell.

His "lovely technique" seems to be the only thing his defenders have.

'He looks so good', 'look how much time he has', "he's pretty', 'he looks the part', "he has the game for this level', 'that shot is gorgeous', 'just sublime". They don't just say this about James Vince; they coo orgasmically. Nothing makes cricket fans happier than a pretty batsman with time. Vince has all the time in the world and is more beautiful than a summer field.
    Jarrod Kimber 18 months ago.

The headline of the article is "pretty starts and brainfarts."

Pretty batsmen who are also legends are few and far between. Tendulkar, Lara, Compton. Kohli, to an extent. Sangakkara

Most serial run scorers are ugly as sin. Cook. Waugh. Border. Gavaskar. I would seriously rather look at a dog's arse than a Jacques Kallis knock. Steve Smith. Graeme Smith! Ugh.

The depressing thing is he'll still keep getting a new go every so often when whoever's turn it is at that time fails and they go "Oh, James Vince? Lovely technique, got to come good eventually."

I see Root is moving back to 3. I get the reasoning behind it but was he not measurably less good at 3 last time we had him there?

If our openers weren't walking wickets he would probably be more keen on 3. I personally don't see the difference. Batting order in Tests is not as important as people think, openers aside.

This could be such a grim series. I wonder what the most runs we'll manage is before we're two wickets down.

Hold the fuck on, the players are going to have shirt numbers on in this series?

No, no, no. I don't approve of this at all.

Should have nicknames too. Stokesy, Woakesy, Roysy, Rooty, Moeeny.

England are so shit at nicknames. We need to improve. Why isn't Jos Buttler known as Jeeves? Why isn't Stokes called the the Red Baron or something? No wonder we are shit.

Who's got or had the best nickname? While it's quite simple I was always quite fond of The Wall.

I hadn't made the connection between Root having the number 66 at all until I saw it explicitly stated today. On the one hand I feel like I should have got it but I'm actually a little pleased that I didn't.

It must be a peculiarly sporting thing, or perhaps a #lad thing to do such shit nicknames because it's always crap when footballers are talking about each other too.

I don't know or encounter that many nicknamed people but barely any of them are just a surname with a 'y' at the end.

Do the womens teams do it as well?

I don't think I've ever been more disappointed than when I found out Ryan Harris' nickname wasn't Rhino (which would have been awesome, and quite apt) but was, in fact, Ryan-o.

Not sure about cricket but Ray 'Romford Pele' Parlour must have one of the best sporting nicknames going.

West Indian cricketers tend to have the best nicknames in cricket. I have always liked "Whispering Death" for Michael Holding.

I've put BIG MONEY (£3) on none of the Ashes tests reaching day 5.

EDIT: Team for the first test confirmed. Burns, Roy, Root, Denly, Buttler, Stokes, Bairstow, Ali, Woakes, Broad, Anderson.

Is Archer left out to make sure he's fit or just no room for him yet with both Broad and Anderson in this one?

Would think it's one of those where you have 12 and you look for the easiest excuse to leave someone out (in this case, Jofra is probably at 85% and we have in-form seamers). I've been in that selection meeting many a time at club level.

I did think when they first mentioned his side / back issue that he wasn't necessarily the most likely for this one anyway. Woakes is in great form and even if you're not planning to have both of them in EVERY test of the series because of age / fitness you'd want Broad and Anderson for the first test.

I think it will be Broad that Jofra eventually retires, so you might see that switch at Lord's. Woakes bosses Lord's so there's no way they will leave him out there.

Anderson is amazing but he is 37 and off the back of a groin injury AND it’s a busy schedule. Be a fair about of chopping and changing from both sides especially in the pace attack.

We always think that and then Jimmy/Broad insist on playing all five.

Anderson will never retire and nor should he.

Didn't realise Sky aren't keeping Gower on after the Ashes.

Is there any other TV coverage he's liable to do or will he end up on the rounds of the radio coverage?

    It's a shame anyway, I like him.

EDIT: I'd forgotten that They Think It's All Over was a thing, and by extension that Gower was on it.

Surely we have someone better than Joe Denly to bat at number 4? The team looks okay apart from that, its going to be a really close series.

Sounds like it'll be Isa Guha, because getting knowledgeable women into the skirt/tits presenting role is something sports broadcasters are addicted to the world over.

Gower is class. One of the old school who knows when to shut the hell up, something very lost on the under 50s of cricket commentary.

I like the Benaud school of comms but I think he’s lost it a bit as an anchor.

Isa Guha is okay. Of the women I’ve heard on cricket Mel Jones is in a different league.

    Mel Jones is brilliant.

I wonder who the commentators will be from current players. Sir Alastair Cook OBE is a bit bland on TMS, as is Anderson. Reckon Broad will/would be good.

I've liked what I've heard of both Guha and Jones.

And Gower knowing when to shut up is one of the things the article I learned this news in was waxing lyrical about, and it's on the money. It's okay to not have to soundbite everything.

Not unhappy that Botham is away if that's the case, he just seems like a miserable sod who'd rather not be there half the time. My dad was working in Pakistan in 2000ish when England toured and met them in an Embassy bar along with the English media lot and apparently Botham was a grumpy dickhead who wasn't just not into talking to the normos but was actively rude.

Nas, Gower and Gough were class though, he says.

Gower also has a great saying nothing/sideways glance face.

Good toss for us to lose tomorrow. I have no idea what the conditions will be like, but if we win it we have to bat (bowling first never seems to work out) and there's no way this lot aren't 4 or 5 down by lunch. Australia have bad memories of sticking us in so I would imagine they'd follow orthodoxy and bat on a won toss, although there must be a temptation to stick us in. Must be a tantalizing prospect as a neutral, carnage in any form could strike at almost any moment.

Either this is just a flattering picture of him the Beeb are using or Tim Paine is a little older than me while looking about a decade younger.

We could probably do with Anderson having knackered himself before lunch of day 1 of the first test.

How does that work? I assume he can be subbed out if need be but whoever comes in can't bowl?

Tim Paine is so far out of his depth in every respect, and they're stuck with him.
