Yeah, Man From Nowhere is shit hot. That window scene is one of my favourite moments from any 'action' film.

Deadpool has given these sorts of films some hope though, purely because Ryan Reynolds has fought the studio and producers so hard to allow it to be rated R in America.

Suicide Squad will probably be worth it just to watch Margot Robbie run around in that outfit.

So, Spectre. I can see why nobody bothered to make a thread.

Not that it's a bad film, the first 40 minutes set the scene quite well and kept me interested, but that it continues to set the scene for another hour is real problem and by that point I was bored. The situation's rescued somewhat in the last 40 minutes, but how the fuck the film in that state, at that length, got through the editing process I'll never know. Probably the shittest selection of Bond girls as well.

6/10 and that might be being generous.

They were doing a live show with Sam Mendes, Daniel Craig and others. He wasn't going to pan it.

He's panned things in front of people before, hasn't he? I stopped thirty seconds into that because I prefer to listen to the podcast but even fear of making your guests walk out shouldn't have you saying 'this is great' in the opening seconds of your review. He either genuinely loved it or he's lost credibility.

I'm still pissed off that that obese cunt Melissa McCarthy is in the reboot. The guy who directed Bridesmaids and Spy is directing, I note.

I hope it bombs horribly and she chokes to death on a chicken leg at the premiere.

Why are you, or anyone else, arsed? The originals are still there.

They're doing a Martyrs PG-13 remake, fucked if I care, I can still watch the original anytime.

Assuming you're talking about the Clooney one, it's good, but given it was a remake in the first place that it's being remade again is hardly worth being bothered by.

I think McCarthy's rubbish too, but people like her, so she's going to be in something.

The Clooney Friends one. The original would have been long forgotten had it not been a Frank Sinatra vehicle.

I'm not arsed about the women thing but another reason for Hollywood to do a load more reboots of films is shit. There's no fucking originality there any more.

Yeah, ideally Hollywood would be able to come up with an original all-female-lead movie that would stand as its own thing, instead of being inevitably overshadowed by the original.

Its no surprise considering Hollywood, and cinema in general, has been doing remakes since pretty much the birth of film. Its just more prevalent now because we're older, and its films we know being remade. Its always happened. Its not like its a brand new phenomenon.

Just a tad more regular now because dearth of blockbuster cinema due to middle aged faggots wanking themselves into a childish fury over nnnnngggggg Batman and any other comic wank means they populate the highest earners every year, hence studios don't wanna take a big money risk on originality.

'Oh my God Spiderman shot his web in exactly the same origin story for the fourth time, hold my hand Laura, I'm all giddy'

Still does seem to be a lack of originality to me. I could go on for a long time about 80's and 90's classics which have few modern comparisons. There's a definite lack of a modern Stallone/Arnie/Willis.

Except they're classics to a bunch of late 20s/early 30s lads who've grown up on them, just as the gangster hits of the 40s-70s appealed to a similar age group. Couple violence with a bad ass lead and males swarm. But yes, our era was the best etc.

That's largely because people don't want them anymore. The Expendables tanked, as has every attempt at an action flick starring an all-action leading man; even a leading man with classic action film cred.

I'd argue it's because 80's action flicks, while fantastic stupid fun, were one of the least original genres in the history of film. Action hero. Guns. Explosions. Save the day. Fin. Any plot beyond that is largely superfluous enablement. Arguably they're all remakes of the same fundamental film.

The Expendables didn't tank commercially - it raked in $250m and spawned 3 sequels.
It wasn't received particularly favourably by the critics.

Just check and the three Expandables have thus far grossed $767m, with a $272m budget.

    That's mental.

My mistake. I must have misremembered something.

EDIT: Ah. The third one flopped, although it did make back cost: http://www.comingsoon.net/movies/new...miscalculation

The second one dropped off from the first, too. I imagine it was powered by the novelty of seeing the big names together, and once that novelty wore off, so did the interest.

Yeah, I'm not a fan of franchise myself - but they seem to make easy money for the makers. Even the 3rd made $207 against a $90m budget. There is a 4th being made, too - I imagine that it's going to be a car crash.

The 3rd Expendables largely flopped because it was a 12A. Which was lovely.

I've just re watched trailers for Skyfall and Spectre. I vividly remember getting goosebumps when I first saw the Skyfall one. I had no such feeling with Spectre. Also the song was fucking garbage.

Taken (the first one, I haven't seen the sequels but heard they were shit) was brilliant. Hasn't the latest Mission Impossible been getting good reviews? I'm sure there are probably more but I think decent action films still do pretty well.

That sounds like a good thing but when you factor in distribution/marketing and all that noise. That's probably just about breaking even.

Double the cost is the general break even rule, no?

And yeah Magic, while I don't think the film itself was as bad as you do, the song was horseshit.
