Me and Earl and the Dying Girl was okay.

It has that, "OK, I know what you're thinking, but..." style voiceover and slightly unnatural smack-talking dialogue that seems so popular after Juno (and possibly before). I don't think it pulls it off as well as others, and you're just left with the classic super cool but somehow isn't popular kid, the one friend he's had all his life but obviously falls out with, and the girl that comes between them. It makes itself seem fresh with its quirkiness and modern pop culture references but ultimately it's just a stereotypical high school movie.

That movie was proper 6/10 stuff. What got everyone so hype for it?

Ok so Sicario wasn't as 'stunning' as the reviews made out. Some really tense scenes but slow in places.

    Del Toro though.

    I've genuinely no idea.

The clearest case of The Emperor's New Clothes as I can ever remember in film.

I forgot to mention the Ebola-ridden coughing and spluttering West African couple that sat ONE SEAT AWAY from us in a virtually empty cinema. There were only three other couples including us! The ignorant fuckers talked at normal volume as well during the film and constantly rustled their fucking food packets. After ten minutes of absolute seethe building up inside me we decided to move, but I didn't want to cause a scene or be branded racist so I just did the most British thing I could think of and got out a tissue, covered my nose and mouth and we both moved right to the back corner of the cinema.

Had the same shit on Sunday when 5 cretins did pretty much the same thing and caused us to move. Bag rustling, constant chatter, and couldn't put the iPhones down.

It's little doubt down to me being an uncouth dullard who's never understood theatre, but I thought Macbeth was a load of boring old wank.

Finally got round to watching In the name of the father.

Daniel Day Lewis is, as usual, a revelation. In terms of the story itself, I've no idea how accurate it was, but fucking hell - it really was a total travesty.

    A fantastic film all round.

I fell asleep, gives you an indication of my thoughts about it.

Sicario on the other hand, Del Toro smashes it, fantastic movie.

It was reasonably accurate apart from some artistic license. E.g the two Conlons never shared a cell.

I think Southpaw is a bit overrated. It's good, but I was expecting something groundbreaking the way people had been banging on about it. It was a lot like American Sniper in that sense.

I enjoyed Magic Mike XXL more than both. Yeah, come at me.

An Auntie of mine works as a cleaner for Michael Wilson and his family, as such she is able to get cast and crew screening tickets.

    We've been there since Quantum.

They confiscate all electronics so no recording or dickheads turning on phones happens and you get an intro about the film from someone. For Quantum it was Michael Wilson with Skyfall being from Sam Mendes.

The trailer did make it seem a bit, I don't know, cookie-cutter - "What happened in Mexico City?" - so that could be true. But I eat that shit up so at worst it ends up being another Mission Impossible.

148 minutes. That's actually only five minutes longer than Skyfall, but that had half an hour of origin story in.

My film nerd friend saw Bridge of Spies in New York with a panel discussion by Spielberg and Tom Hanks afterwards, lucky bastard. I feel like it has all the makings of a classic, though obviously that doesn't mean anything unless it's actually a film of that level. But he said that it was.

He discussed it with Spielberg and Hanks afterwards - there's no chance he didn't factor that into his opinion of the film.

Maybe I just don't like Star Wars but there's about 8000 characters in there to the point where one of them (I have no idea what their names are) looks like she's actively trying to get around Harrison Fords far larger head despite it looking like they're inches from each other. Is that supposed to be Darth Vader at the bottom? The black guys body disappears into a rocket ship. etc.

You generally have to whisper this, but you're right, the original Star Wars movies aren't that good, with the prequels being mostly garbage.

I'm really, really, REALLY hoping for it to be bad. The amount of people getting their hopes up and getting burned twice over a bunch of movies that weren't good the first time round is just the type of thing I like.

Don't get me wrong, they're not awful, but like the Lord of the Rings trilogy I'm simply not having the 8.5's and 9's that get chucked around on iMDB.

I found them all to be massively bland, and despite lasting longer than the 100 years war, severely lacking an insight into, or development of, the characters portrayed within.

They looked nice at the time, but Jackson even managed to shit on that with the bang average set of Blu Ray releases.

The only thing that pisses me off about the LOTR trilogy is the omission of Tom Bombadills story, the Barrow Wight and the Old Forrest (they gave some remnants of those things to Treebeard in the second film) with the motivation that "it didn't add to the story enough and the films were long enough as they are". Which was sort of fair enough, but then why add a bunch of other random shite (like half of what Arwen does) and more importantly - subsequently go on to make 3 (!) fucking films that all are like 3 (!) fucking hours from a book that was 100 pages.

The first two (as in the old ones) Star Wars films are brilliant, but Return of the Jedi doesn't get going for the best part of two hours. The Endor stuff in particular is complete shit. The prequels meh I don't care.

I'm looking forward to Star Wars, though I agree that only The Empire Strikes Back is that outstanding. The original was quite good and Return of the Jedi had it's moments (despite being as Lewis says full of Ewok-related shite). The prequels are awful in almost all respects.

In other news, I had never watched Gone with the Wind, so decided to do that this weekend.
It's technically very impressive and you can see how influential it's been even though the story isn't up to much. More notable than the story is the setting in the civil war US south. How this is depicted is completely anachronistic by now - and all the more interesting for it.
The American civil war is portrayed as Yankee aggression and nothing to do with slavery. We've got the slaves, referred to throughout as "darkies", shown as blissfully happy, supportive of the Confederacy and unsuited for rights that are eventually granted them. We've got anything to do with the north - Shermans army, the carpetbaggers and the reconstruction shown as vile and intrusive (though in the case of the March to the Sea there may be a legitimate point). We've got marital rape being portrayed in a positive light. We've even got the KKK, though not mentioned by name (the political meeting) being lionised.
Obviously it'd all be a complete disgrace if released now, but it's fascinating to see how mainstream attitudes, even those in the US south, have developed.

I should probably watch the original three Star Wars, it's been ages since I have. I've always assumed that they must be pretty good for how iconic they became. Does that generally work as a rule?

It's a bit less than 4 hours. I actually watched most of it yesterday and the final hour today.
