I watched A Serious Man on the tellybox last night. The first Coens effort I've seen. Are they all like that? Completely other-worldly, every shot treated like an oil painting, unsubtle motifs that don't seem to link into the rest of the film but probably do if you think about it. I quite liked it, I guess.

I think that's the only one I've not seen actually. I think it's one of the poorer ones from what I gather.

Your summation isn't far off though, although things like Fargo, Big Lebowski and Burn After Reading are a bit lighter.

Has anyone seen the Michael Crichton Westworld film? Wondering if it's worth watching before the TV series.

It's a good film so it's worth watching for that reason, but from everything I've seen and heard of the TV show it's taking the basic premise in a different direction, so it's probably irrelevant to your enjoyment of that.

Michael Bay is a colossal walloper, but the outrage over this stuff eludes me. Think of it as Jim Bowen offering any watching German a look at what they could have won and lol it away.

I wonder what backwards plot nonsense they'll be using to get the Nazis into a Transformers film though. Iron Sky crossover, hopefully.

I wasn't expecting much from Independence Day 2 and nor do I normally post mid-film, but fuck me it's shit.

Almost nothing of any interest has happened, the new characters are rubbish, but perhaps the worst thing is it just looks so cheap - worse than cookie cutter CGI, terrible acting, shocking racial stereotypes and a veneer about the whole thing that makes it seem straight to Channel 5.

I was quite critical of Will Smith for not bothering (supposedly due to the cash), but maybe he saw the script and CGI plans.

Its got an uneasy, odd vibe after the fairly simple opening, lets it all build gradually and just goes haywire at a certain point. Some lovely cinematography in there at times too, albeit being lower budget a few of the actors in the lesser roles are quite bad (The 'Taters' Manager as one example).

Liking it will depend on wha you want from horror, really, but it gets a solid 7 bordering on 8 for me.
I was sure I posted about this a few days ago, but it's not in the thread.

Anyway, I watched this and thought it was great. I thought I knew where it was going, but it took me completely by surprise.

Definitely a unique watch, although I do agree with some of the acting - it was pretty piss poor outside the main few characters, I thought. Didn't ruin it though. I think somewhere around 7.5/10 is where I'd have it.

I then watched The House of the Devil, although I was pissed when I watched it. I thought it did an UNBELIEVABLE job of making it feel like the 80s. My wife, who was also watching it, was 100% sure this was an 80s film and I'd got the release date wrong. It did a brilliant job of building suspense, but I do think they probably left it slightly too long before stuff starting happening. A few odd twists, including the finale (that I wasn't overly keen on), but overall an enjoyable film. Not as good as Starry Eyes, but a 7/10 nonetheless.

The Witch is just quite simply incredible.

Horrifically scary with so many layers. What seems to be a fairly obvious film to make even the genre (New England horror British early settlers) hasn't really been touched on, that I can remember anyway. Superb stuff.

Saw Eight Days a Week, Ron Howard's documentary on the Beatles' touring years. I thought it was great, just as pleasurable as it should've been but also insightful at times. Can't beat the fucking Beatles can you.

The Witch made me feel properly uneasy, in a good way.

Was looking for a film on Churchill and found Into The Storm. If I hadn't have known beforehand that it was Brendan Gleeson playing him I'm not sure I'd have clocked it was him. Top stuff.

Will Smith knocked it back about five years ago though, so he can't have seen the script. I don't see how that script could have been knocking around for five years without everyone realising what a complete shambles it was.

There's probably a brilliant horror film in the Roanoke story, but other than that any film set in that period would likely be a generic 'stranger in a strange land' tale.

There's a new Korean horror film out today from the geezer behind The Chaser and The Yellow Sea, called The Wailing. It's sitting on a perfect score on RottenTomatoes and it's almost three hours long.

I watched The Truman Show earlier. I have seen it before, but it was years and years ago, and I never appreciated the attention to detail in making his world mental but not so mental that you wouldn't notice it unless you were already onto them (everyone getting off the bus without moaning being the obvious example).

I keep coming back to thinking about giving it a go, it must surely be worth a watch for Goldblum alone, right? Then I see comments like this from someone who liked the first and had low expectations going in to this.

I normally base mine on if it's hated here then I'm going to like it, but a no from Yev is worrying.

With Goldblum in it it should have at least been decent and even though I've seen it I struggle to understand how they muffed it so hard. But, and I can't overstate this, it's fucking terrible. It makes Jurassic World look like a masterpiece.

That said, I encourage people to watch it, just to see for themselves.

Jeff Goldblum could have saved it if he was given a single line of decent dialogue, but I'll offer up an example of the quality of spoken word in that film.

Girl - 'There's a tall, lanky man over there waving at us.'
Julius Levinson - 'Tall? Lanky? That must be my David.'

    And the world wept.

It's impossible to overstate just how terrible it is.

Looks like I'll be forgetting it then.

Did you get round to The Wailing? Very good if not great, keeps you guessing towards the end. Looking to see a few other Korean films- Mother, The Chaser and The Man From Nowhere.

I've seen the latter mentioned on here but not the first two. First up is Dark City though.

I've grabbed The Wailing but I haven't yet been in the mood for it. The Man From Nowhere is an action masterpiece. There was a bit of a back and forth about The Chaser on the old board but in sum, it's absolutely mental, absolutely brutal, and very good.

Seen an ad the other day for a showing of JJ Abrams first Star Trek in the National Concert Hall with the Concert Orchestra doing the score live. Picked up tickets, should be interesting if nothing else and I quite like the film.

That Trainspotting 2 ad looks dogshit. "Choose, Twitter, Choose Facebook..." Fuck off.

Reeks of the new generation being written by the old.

Choose life Choose Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and hope that someone, somewhere cares Choose looking up old flames, wishing you’d done it all differently And choose watching history repeat itself Choose your future Choose reality TV, slut shaming, revenge porn Choose a zero hour contract, a two hour journey to work And choose the same for your kids, only worse, and smother the pain with an unknown dose of an unknown drug made in somebody’s kitchen And then… take a deep breath You’re an addict, so be addicted Just be addicted to something else Choose the ones you love Choose your future Choose life
