I thought there were 3 or 4 cracking set pieces in it like that, but it was missing something to string it all together to make it brilliant.

I went to see Swallows and Amazons today. I've never read the book or watched any of the previous adaptations, I thought it was quite good. Some parts were a bit disjointed and it couldn't quite capture the essence of a great kids adventure film like The Goonies/Stand by Me but it was a decent way to spend just over 90 minutes.

Watched a really nice Iranian film called Children of Heaven on Netflix.

Finally got around to watching Generation P after reading the book years ago (on Challengers recommendation, funnily enough) and am please to say it lived up to expectation. Took a trippy turn [very] late on, but how could it not if it wanted to stay true to the source! Top stuff.

I've just re-watched The Martian. Donald Glover's character really is a bit silly and out of place. Also Sean Bean goes from being crew manager for the initial launch, to suddenly being completely in charge of the rescue launch.
    Still a cracking film.

I've just finished the book, it's great.

Also your qualms are in the book, well not as pronounced especially with Sean Bean's character but they're from the source.

Is Glover's character as neurotic (not sure how to describe him - like flaky and unaware of anyone else) in the book?

The Nice Guys was a proper decent comedy. 7.5 all day long which is saying something. Though in saying that I enjoyed Spy so you'll all probably hate it.

I've turned it off for now at precisely that point, and said 'fuck off' out loud.

I'd like to know the names of everyone involved in approving Tim Roth's performance, so I can be sure never to watch a film involving any of them ever again.

I thought it was excellent. It's over the top, a bit long winded during the first act, but I was thoroughly entertained throughout.

Whilst I'm here, Fury was slightly disappointing. War, tanks, blood, tanks, tanks, Shia LaBeouf, more fucking tanks, predictable ending.

Yep, its a cracking film, same as Django. Also I'll knock a list of some films up as I saw your post the other day SvN.

I liked Django. It was half an hour too long and Tarantino's cameo was the worst thing ever committed to film until Tim Roth in H8, but it was at least entertaining throughout and the interplay between Django and Schultz was great.

Most of the dialogue in Hateful Eight, the first half of it at least, feels artificially lengthened for no real dramatic or artistic purpose, as though Tarantino has decided that he can no longer make a film shorter than a hundred and fifty minutes.

I like Tarantino's dialogue to be honest (bar Death Proof), so it felt fine to me. The film fully takes off when the cabin properly comes into play, and yeah the film could've started at that point. Its not his strongest work though.

Gimme time I'm a working man ffs. I have just watched a horror I've been putting off for a while because I'd convinced myself it was about werewolves for some reason.

    Starry Eyes

An aspiring young actress gets an audition for a well respected known director, and shit completely and utterly hits the fan. Its got an uneasy, odd vibe after the fairly simple opening, lets it all build gradually and just goes haywire at a certain point. Some lovely cinematography in there at times too, albeit being lower budget a few of the actors in the lesser roles are quite bad (The 'Taters' Manager as one example).

Liking it will depend on wha you want from horror, really, but it gets a solid 7 bordering on 8 for me.

Will watch it tomorrow, as ended up watching Transpecos tonight:

    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt4687464/

A solid, tight, short drama. Good leads, its an enjoyable tale. 7/10

Not much more to add really but worth a watch.

I watched The Purge: Anarchy last night. I'm a bit of a sucker for a slightly crap horror film though so I quite enjoyed it and Frank Grillo was pretty decent. It doesn't actually go for that many scares, mind. More constant unease.
