I saw The Intern tonight. It was quite enjoyable and I like de Niro and Hathaway. There wasn't any particularly impressive or remarkable about it, it was very much just a "well this is quite nice" film. The writing was quite good, it flowed well; the no action, all dialogue plot could have been a mess in the wrong hands.

Tried to watch Guardians of the Galaxy tonight as I thought it was meant to be good and a bit different from the usual comic book stuff. Couldn't hack it. Load of bollocks.

Meru is a great documentary about mountain climbing. Almost perfect as far as documentaries on such a subject can go, I'd say.

It's one hell of cast, but Gyllenhaal is also normally a good sign and look at that Prince of Persia farce. Probably wrong to go into any movie with preconceptions based on the medium of the source material, but... Yeah, they're there.

I watched the first half of Jurassic World last night. Dear oh dear. The same shit, recycled, with a worse plot, worse characters and worse dinosaurs. Why yet again have the 2 kids, person who doesn't like kids and dinosaur expert hero, none of whom you could possibly root for? It's so formulaic, and don't even get me started on the shit CGI. The first one was great because there was an actual dilemma about what was happening, and the characters were spot on.

Yeah, I'd agree with that Harold. Massively disappointing and that it was quite well received shows how far standards have fallen.

In other news, Gwyneth Paltrow doesn't seem to be aware of why Robert Downey Junior gets paid so much for Iron Man.

Interesting. I'd probably watch Fassbender in most things and I managed to sit through (and enjoy) Coriolanus so it seems that high school hasn't completely destroyed Shakespeare for me.

Cary Joji Fukunaga, the bloke who done the first load of True Detective, has done a thing about child soldiers with Idris Elba in it. It's going on Netflix next week, and having just noticed the advert for it a couple of minutes ago I now can't fucking wait.

One of the best documentaries ever. It's very similar to the Paradise Lost ones, which I think are a bit better and there's about 6 hours worth of those.

    I'll check them out.

Also Bowling for C was good, but Moore's narrative of everything is the white man's fault and excusing crime was a bit tiresome.

Heading to see a documentary called Older Than Ireland soon as the Mrs wanted to see it and I bought tickets. I think it's just interviews with 100 year olds.

I'm not a big fan of unhappy endings, I want films to make me feel good, so if something ends unhappily and I'm well invested in the characters, as I imagine I'd be with Matt Damons, I don't really want to watch it.

I don't want to know exactly what happens, just if it's a happy ending or not.

I'm a fan of both, it really depends on the tone of the film up to that point as to which way it should end.

I'm not saying there's anything wrong with unhappy endings, I appreciate it sometimes can make the storytelling a lot better and that it has it's place. A few films I love have had some sad or at least ambiguous endings. Bladerunner is one of my favourite films and I can't say the ending (final cut) is too happy really, for instance. I also don't mind unhappy endings if they don't really make me feel sad. Like most horror films - I don't giva a fuck about who dies in them, expect most people to die, so it doesn't matter much. Then again I generally only like a select few horror films.

But most of the time, I just want to watch sort of not so brainy stuff that puts my mind off work and other stuff for 2 hours, and I like to get out of the experience feeling good about it. Not sad, not thoughtful, I don't want to lay awake thinking about the film after - even if I can see how a good film in many peoples eyes makes you contemplate it a lot afterwards - I want it to be a 2 hour experience and no more, no less.

That's why I love films like Jurassic Park or Super hero franchises - you know what to expect, you get that, it's nice to look at mostly, and then it's over. I tend to get very invested in characters I like in films, and if they end up dying or getting miserable I end up feeling a bit bad afterwards, and I don't like feeling bad.

Is that strange? I'm not sure how that makes me a weirdo to be honest. It's just my preference.

I do, a lot, I love almost all Disney films.
The Lion King is one of my favourite all time films probably, but seeing Mufasa die still makes me well up a little every time.

Things I've found today and am excited about...

    1. Bill and Ted 3 is apparently scripted http://www.metalinjection.net/at-the...s-really-close
    2. The Deep Web is an interesting documentary I found via the trailer in the above link on the subject of Silk Road/DPR.
    3. The trailer for Batman v Superman from a couple of months back does nothing to make me any more positive about combining one of my favourite characters from the world of comics with his ultimate antithesis (at least mainstream DC-wise) that I find deeply uninteresting

The ranking of Bond films there isn't too bad. I would go with something along the lines of:

    1) Skyfall
    2) From Russia With Love
    3) Licence To Kill
    4) Dr No
    5) On Her Majesty's Secret Service
    6) The Living Daylights
    7) Live and Let Die
    8) Goldfinger
    9) Casino Royale
    10) GoldenEye
    11) The Spy Who Loved Me
    12) Die Another Day
    13) A View to a Kill
    14) For Your Eyes Only
    15) You Only Live Twice
    16) Octopussy
    17) Tomorrow Never Dies
    18) Thunderball
    19) The World is Not Enough
    20) Quantum of Solace
    21) The Man With The Golden Gun
    22) Moonraker
    23) Diamonds Are Forever

Rushed this post last night and missed a couple out. Will give reasons for choices shortly.
