Bridge of Spies stuff, couple more and it'll probably need a thread.

To break this annoying spoilerfest - I just watched Obvious Child. It's quite a nice little comedy and Jenny Slate is adorable.

Just watched The Big Lebowski. What an excellent film, it's so 90s. The Dude is a cool guy, not a jobsworth, welfare claiming, waster cunt. Some good laughs and the harmony between Candy, Buscemi and Bridges was great. A great trio.

"Is this your homework Larry? Have you ever heard of Vietnam?"

I've bought my 6 year old nephew a box set of Dahl books for Christmas. I'm not sure he's read any of them before, the lucky bastard.

Looks like your standard humans vs. aliens shooty fare, the first one had so much more about it.

And I must have mentioned this a million times already since it was announced, but if Will Smith is going to stick to risk free middle-of-the-road stuff for his entire career, then he's a monstrous twat for not doing it.

It's some speech but it makes no sense in the context of a second invasion. You already said the fourth of July won't just be an American holiday, mate. Get some new patter.

I'm fairly sure when that alien was telling him the plan via telepathy he said that they took their whole civilisation from planet to planet, so this film retroactively makes him a bluffing twat.

Yup. I finished it but it was mostly stubbornness and the feeling that it must end up alright if it's so highly regarded. Nope. Thought it was shite and boring.

Of course it will be. It would be poor writing and mark him as a shitty president if they just rehashed the original speech in the film itself. It still doesn't work.

Yeah that's what I thought as well. It seems to suffer the more and more common GCI fate in films of doing everything really Fuzzy, Dark, Smoky & a (only a little) Fiery [MASSIVE] scenes - presumably of the same reasons they stick a sepia filter on all videogames (it makes it easier to animate or something).

The first (new) Superman film is one of the best (worst) examples of this horrible trend. The Superman vs Batman one looks like it's much the same. Thor - The Dark world is another. Just having watched the X-Men Apocalypse trailer, I can see it happening there as well. There are surely more that I can't think of now though.

In fairness, it seems appropriate for a global disaster movie.

No it's not that, it's that they make everything basically really hard to make out.

    Look at this pic:

    then look at these:

    Godzilla (2014):

    Man of Steel:

I can go on, but I can't be bothered to hunt down screenshots. You get the idea, right?

The point is the CGI in films all look the same these days, it's just a blurred, dark, smoky mess with some hints of fire here and there. It get's really boring visually. The latest film with some decent CGI that didn't quite do this that I can remember was Cloud Atlas. Avatar was also a little different in it's style.

Which ties nicely into I've booked tickets to watch that [Star Wars] in 3D (not that it will make it better) on the 28th of December at the DCA. £8.60 a ticket is pretty swish compared to London prices.

    Acting/plot/script > CGI.

CGI should be used where it is simply impossible to replicate in real life, and serve only as a very slight compliment.

At the start of Spectre, there's a CGI crow. A fucking crow!

I don't see a lot wrong with the first two pictures, and the Superman one is clearly designed to focus attention on Superman.

The problem with the Superman picture is that it's mega desaturated, as the whole film was:

Spoonsky has it right. It just is a little boring to watch all these dark CGI-heavy films now. It feels like they all have the same art director or whoever is in charge of how shit is supposed to generally look in a film.

As for CGI, it's absolutely fine when it's done well and there's a reason to do it, but far more often than not (as Maz's post above and countless other examples aptly demonstrate) it's just done badly.

I think the second Matrix films and all those shit Neo's probably broke the floodgates for that one.

Oh, without a doubt, but if these films accomplish one thing it should be to be entertaining and fun (like, you know, comic books). That's one thing that the Marvel folks got right, whereas Man of Steel completely didn't.

Lol at the '2 Star 2 Trek' comment on that video. It's a shame the Fast and Furious films are so financially successful, because Justin Lin is not a good director but he'll keep getting work as long as there's money coming in. That will make a fucking fortune.

The look of Man of Steel was a bit irritating, and I imagine it was near unwatchable in 3D, but the eleventy thousand times they broke their own rules were a much bigger problem.
