Chalamet in this has got to be one of the worst casting calls in recent memory.

I'd have quite liked to see Hugh Grant take the role, rather than being an Oompa Loompa.

Wow, I've never seen him in anything before. He is an appalling actor.

He's fine, and has the face of someone who could portray Willy Wonka, but he doesn't have an eccentric bone in his body. Grumpy teenager (Dune) is pretty bang on for him.

Wonka should always be a bitter cunt. I can't have him being a wide-eyed, optimistic turbo twat. Or Johnny Depp.

    Eyes Wide Shut

It was only at a later age I realised how beautiful that era's Kidman is. Stunning woman.

I found this a bit...dull? I get the meaning behind it, that subtext, but its in essence not very entertaining. Not very gripping.

I can imagine that 'sequence' being shocking at the time. Twenty-five years ago it would have been scintillating, a big production so openly sexual.

But yeah, Cruise is decent but he has been better. Some wonderful cinematography and opulence.

But not one of Kubrick's best.

    A Few Good Men

Absolutely chewing of scenery. Nicholson is so OTT its marvellous. Cruise seems to still be finding his feet at being the big star. Moore is okay. Bacon is brilliant but he rarely isn't.

Very, very early to mid 90s. Cheese overload at points. The section at the end, post-Nicholskn's infamous scene, is so so bad I laughed out loud.

Was never bored, and was caught up in it. Its an enjoyable film that has aged, bar a few scenes, fucking terribly.

Somewhat amused by seeing the Critical Drinker's video about the new live action Snow White movie and realising that Disney have chosen to remove the dwarfs, because we can't do that any more (?), thus depriving actual dwarfs of roles in the movie.

On the famous scene, I liked this anecdote from Reiner.

Apparently a load of the actor's partners turned up to watch as well (including Bruce Willis) as the buzz was that it was going to be dynamite.

Mission Impossible was pretty good. CGI got a bit ropey at the end.

Anyone still using Pass the Popcorn website and know much about their inner workings, if so, what's happened to it? It's been down for days now.

It's just down mate. No timescale on return. Tracker still works but not the website.

Just people being overly amused that two such contrasting films have come out at the same time and people thinking it's the very height of entertainment to let it be known they're watching them as a double-bill.

Speaking of which, I did Barbenheimer today. I enjoyed Barbie more tbh. Oppenheimer is still very good too though.

Releasing them the same day was genius marketing as it has been meme domination ever since.

How long are both together, and did you have to move screens?

I’m hoping for a Spiderverse marathon being available in cinemas when the next ones out.

I can't remember the last time any new release was talked about as much as these two are. Whoever came up with Barbenheimer is probably owed about a billion dollars.

They said it was the biggest cinema weekend for four years or something. The power of a half-decent marketing campaign.

I don't think anyone is mad enough to watch them literally back to back. It's more just going to see them the same day. Go see one in the morning/afternoon, have lunch/dinner and then go see the other in the afternoon/evening.

I went to see Barbie in the morning, went for lunch, then Oppenheimer in the afternoon. Went to a different cinema to see Oppenheimer in Imax too. Not sure Imax is worth it.

Was it standard IMAX or one of the IMAX showing the film reel rather than the digital intermediate? For instance near me only IMAX at Manchester Printworks is showing the film reel, not IMAX Trafford Centre.

Saw Barbie last week and Oppenheimer is next week. I feel like it's 100% nailed-on that the former will be better.

Also saw The Batman (the one with Robert Pattinson) which was kinda the best Batman movie that didn't have Keith Legend in it? Felt a lot like Year One, if anyone's read that

Yeah it is too long but the commitment to visually striking frames looking like comic panels is admirable.

Oh yeah it's definitely too long. Like I don't remember thinking any specific bit is bad but it needed a trim.

I also like that he doesn't really do wild gadgets other than the contacts.

Good to know. Trailer looks good but they often do so was skeptical.

Nothing will top Wake in Fright from the Aussies though.

Re: Batman - would agree with most of that. Other thing I don't really think it needed was Catwoman. Just a very tedious character who didn't really add anything to the main story.

I feel like they used the Batman stomping in(literally) slowly from the shadows off screen too many times. I don't even think he really "detected" anything himself.

Agree that the last 20-30 minutes do not feel like it belongs in the same film as the rest of it.

It's hands down the best Batman effort. The aesthetic and performances piss all over anything prior.

I didn't know they'd remade it again (though hardly surprised ). I'm certainly not paying 18 quid to look at Robert Pattinsons face though, maybe later.

Considering it came out nearly a year ago I don’t think you have to worry about that unless you have a very expensive streaming service.

As someone who hasn’t paid for a film outside of a cinema in decades those prices blow my mind.

On most films YouTube has a 3 or 4 quid rental option, but there's the odd few like this are buy only.

I thought Nope was fine but I felt the tone was a bit unbalanced. Wasn't that great at comedy and the best horror came from the flashbacks. Still perfectly watchable.
