Finally watched The Irishman today. It's good and really didn't feel like 3 and a half hours, but it isn't a patch on Goodfellas and it sort of left me wondering what the point was.

Yeah not as good as Casino either. Watched it again on 4K disc the other day and the scenes with the Vegas lights are stunning.

Just watched The Invisible Man, which was quite unnerving, largely thanks to the performance of Elizabeth Moss. Though the score for the film was done really well as well.

I need to rewatch Casino. I couldn't get on with it but I think I was all gangstered out.

I wondered that, and the best I could come up with was to get them all in a film before they die.

Which can't be far away and if this:

People on YouTube doing better jobs really shows how bad it was. Alternatively, just get a younger actor to gurn his way through the early parts. Robert De Niro won on Oscar doing exactly that.

The whole reason it falls apart is because it's a 40+ head on an 80 year old body. You can't act your way out of that.

They got away with it for the most part, but in the fight scene and a few others (the scene on the rocks for one) they should have just used a body double. It just looks ridiculous as it is.

There's an open table discussion with Scorsese and some of the cast on Netflix that I watched afterwards and they're genuinely having conversations about the cast being told to get out of the chair they're in quicker or walk down stairs faster.

I enjoyed The Irishman, even if the CGI did leave a bit to be desired at some point. I don't think you can compare it to Goodfellas or Casino, as it was a different sort of film, really.

Back at the cinema tonight for the first time in ages, which was great, and watched the remake of Candyman (not my choice), which was dreadful.

The reviews on IMDB seem to be focused exclusively on how it was a tirade against the white man, which I personally found to be the only interesting thing in it. No, what killed it for me were two things:

It made no sense. I don't know whether this was because it received a harsh edit to hit that 90 minute sweet spot, but the ending just chucked a load of things at you that were proper nonsense.

It had a stupid amount of the ART world in it, which (to my recollection at least) has never been portrayed in anything other than an incredibly irritating way outside of Lovejoy and that show might only have gotten away with it due to the brilliance of Ian McShane.

I heard the race stuff, also heard there wasn't much in the way of scares. The thing that made the original work was it's constant unsettling atmosphere, and the subtlety of the race issue (the history of Cabrini Green, the fact people only take Candyman seriously when a white person complains about him, etc) whereas the reviews for this one sound like his now Black Panther who only kills white people. A bit on the nose.

Yep, it's very unsubtle and definitely isn't scary if you've watched a few horrors before.

I might have to re-watch the original now.

I watched Don't Breathe. It's not trying to be exactly like Hush but it's in a similar sort of vein and Hush is just a lot better. It's kind of a film where I'm not really rooting for anybody involved which makes it hard to get invested and rids it of any tension it might have. Also the "BEING BLIND IS REALLY A SORT OF SUPERPOWER!!!" thing is a bit.... hmm.

Stillwater is pretty plodding and pretty uneventful. The Amanda Knox story is much better without this homage.

There were already more bad films than good ones before they decided to dig it up, I'd keep expectations super low and if it's not a big smelly turd then huzzah.

It looks interesting based on the trailer, but not very Matrix-y. Some of the shots are gorgeous though, and I like Keanu so I'll watch it.

Wank is being kind. I’m not sure if it’s 2 or 3 me and my mates went to see after sixth form one day and it is undoubtedly, far and away the worst film I’ve ever watched in the cinema.

Although I did get change for a £20 after paying with a £10 so it wasn’t all bad.

I don't even think I can be nostalgic for the Matrix. It's a very specific thing that, the further we get away from it, is kind of bollocks. Like a shit Tron.

It's still a decent concept, but it felt even older than it is and being dated is a pretty major flaw in a Futuristic SciFi film.

Michael Schumacher documentary, out now https://www.netflix.com/title/81399204

A couple reviews (especially The Telegraph) not happy with it glossing over his accident, but Netflix is being very open with the fact it was produced with Schumacher's family, who understandably don't wanna be like 'he's dead but we're keeping him breathing olol soz.'

    My Son

Drama/Thriller with James McAvoy and Claire Foy. Their son goes missing - thats about the entire premise. The wonderful thing about this is McAvoy's entire script is improvised. He had no idea where the plot was going, what the motivations were, and he had no lines of dialogue given to him. A rough outline of his character and away he goes, he finds things out as we do. And fucking fuck me is he astonishing in it.

Really, really good film, which even without this 'gimmick' would be a solid and enjoyable thing. I always thought McAvoy was very good but this has elevated him.

I've watched that now and definitely agree. You get a little bit of his character (like the obsession with perfection and how he really made himself a part of that Ferrari team) but it takes huge chunks of time out that really should've been expanded on. No mention of the Monaco parking job and the subsequent, "You know what I am." bit in the press conference. No mention of how he was trying to make comebacks during Massa's time but couldn't sort his neck out. And, as others have said, they seem to give the contributors (James Allen, Ross Brawn) three different titles. Friend, commentator, biographer, teammate, former F1 boss, etc.

I watched two things last night. The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf is decent. I struggle to see that as the younger version of Vesemir as he's just too sexy and one of the trials they have for the prospective witcher boys is just the dumbest shit imaginable but otherwise I enjoyed it well enough.

Then watched Zombieland: Double Tap. I dunno if it's actually alright or if it's just because I'm a sucker for a zombie film. It's fine and has some good moments though it's pretty unmemorable. Has its best action scene in the middle then ends on a bit of a meh one. I also found it a bit jarring that I've only seen the kid sister in the two Zombieland films so first thing I saw her in she's a skinny 13 year old and in this she's.... somewhat bustier.
