    Film Thread

    Should get this started.

I've been re-watching for the first time in years Lord of the Rings. Thing is Popcorn Time has the extended director's cut on or whatever it's called, so they're about four hours each. I've been taking them like TV-shows and watching one hour at a time basically. Just started Return of the King.

Age of Ultron is on Popcorn so I reckon I'll give that a re-watch at some point as well.

I saw it while actually in LA

It was great. It helped that I was a fan of the music, but my friend's wife, who had no idea about them, loved it (probably more than me). It's a solid 7/10 I reckon.

I saw The Visit last night. Crap, but not as crap as I expected. 5/10

Finally saw Sicario last night after months of anticipation. Thought it was very good. In a lot of ways it reminded me of
    Toggle Spoiler

which is one of my favourite films. But I've been a big fan of Villeneuve for a while now and once again he demonstrates his talent for suspense imo.

Also saw a UK movie called Bridgend which was based on 70+ unexplained teen suicides in Wales some years ago. I liked it even though it was a bit weird, but had a great soundtrack and the girl playing the main character (Hannah Murray) was rather good.

Watched Straight Outta Compton with Baz on the opening weekend and we both loved it.

I'm as far as the Kurt Russell bit and it's been slightly disappointing so far.

Went to see Legend on Wednesday night. Thought it was good but I think they made Reggie a bit nice. Yeah he wasn't as mad as his brother but he was still a massive mentalist and I don't think that was portrayed enough.

Looking forward to Everest and would like to see The Martian.

Watched Southpaw this week, I really enjoyed it during the film despite it going a bit Rocky and unbelievable. Now, I'm not sure I actually liked it or not. What did everyone else think?

One thing I found annoying about Everest was that, other than a couple of main characters, it was difficult to keep track of who was who and what was happening to the different groups on the climb.

Turns out 50 Cent is perfect as the 'dickhead you want to punch' character. I'm like you though, I enjoyed it during and then I left feeling a bit unsatisfied, Gyllenhaal's performance aside.

I've stuck Spy on for some lazy Sunday night shit. It's only been on for 15 minutes and I'm so close to turning it off already.

It's not funny or interesting, but worst of all, Miranda fucking Hart is in it.

It was pretty cool I thought. I mean, it's Dinosaurs chasing people, you can only do that in so many ways. I thought it was going to be so stupid with trained raptors. It kind of was, but not as bad as I thought it would be.

A few nice little nods to the old films, took a page out of Skyfalls book there.

Chris Pratt wore the Goldblum mantle pretty well I thought.

So Spy is absolutely all over the place.

A shit script, a nothing plot and only two laughs (nay smiles) in its ludicrous 130 minute running time.

    I feel violated.

Yeah, never before have so many critics been so wrong.

    It's absolute shite.

EDIT: Well I say never before, not since Mad Max is probably more true.

I cannot stand Melissa McCarthy. Her entire shtick seems to be "Look, it's a fat woman doing stuff normal women do, but because she's fat, it looks funny".

She is absolutely rubbish, so much so that Miranda Hart (who I thought was about as low as popular comedy gets at the moment) almost looks good next to her. Almost.

That said, she's given nothing at all to work with here, in what must be one of the worst scripts I've seen for a long time.

If it wasn't for Jason Statham (and he's hardly great) it would be The Other Woman levels of bad.

Any suggestions for romantic comedies/dramas? Suggested to the missus that we'd watch a movie tonight, but I'm out of ideas as I don't usually watch that kind of stuff and I really can't be dealing with the inevitable costume drama she's going to suggest.

I actually quite enjoyed Stuck in love when I saw it.

Short term 12 is now battling it out with Pitch perfect 2.

    Thanks for the suggestions.

Romantic drama is alright too. Our taste in movies is really different and there's very little common ground so she can't be too picky. We're already on her turf with these.

Watched American Ultra and Ted 2 last night. The first was entertaining enough, bizarre storyline to follow but had a few laughs, wouldn't say it was worth a watch in the cinema that being said. The latter was as to be expected, if you enjoyed the first then you will enjoy this one, the improv comedy scene did have me the girlfriend laughing our heads off though.

    6/10 for both respectively.

For future reference, stick on Eternal Sunshine and chuck her if she doesn't like it.

Would have to agree with Yev. Almost all jokes fell flat probably due to 2 of the most unpleasant women in comedy being the main characters. I would have turned it off if it wasn't for the gf who was moderately enjoying it.

The only part I didn't like was the bit where McCarthy predictably failed to jump over a car. Was that a parody of a parody? Not sure.

Maybe it's because I was in the cinema and a bunch of other people were having a good time it caught me. I think in the house it isn't something I would have remotely considered watching.

I fucking hate the cinema so I'm the opposite really. Will only go the cinema for a real blockbuster event that deserves the big screen. I'm a complete snob too so will only venture to the picturehouse which has sofa's etc. The normal cinema is full of scum eating the whole way through and talking to eachother.

I do plan on making an effort for The Martian as it's one of my favourite books.

The other thing that fucking pisses me off about the cinema is the trailers beforehand ruining every film I could possibly want to see. I don't like seeing any trailers whatsoever.

I went to see the last James Bond and there was an 'on the red carpet' segment beforehand which included scenes from the film I was just about to watch. Then there was an advert for the computer game which included scenes from the film I was just about to watch and then there was an advert for the watch or phone or something which also included scenes from the film. That's when I decided the cinema was truly shit.
