Joaquin Phoenix accepting a shit ton of money to appear in Joker, a film where only 2 of the leading 20 roles are played by black actors, and the willingly accepting a BAFTA nomination... Then going on stage to lecture everybody about lack of diversity.. I mean, come on man. If you genuinely believe there is a problem, at least try to do something about it.

Is he meant to turn down the film entirely, then?

Natalie Portmans production company has hired 0 female directors. And she has also only worked with 2 female directors as an actor.

Why not? Perhaps he could request a higher percentage of back actors before he signs on. If he is that outraged by underrepresentation - perhaps he should make a stand.

What stand would it have been, though? Like let's really think about the chain of events.

"Ya know, I will pass because I believe there should be a higher percentage of diversity among the cast and crew."

    "No problem, Joaquin."

    *hangs up*

"Uhhhh we have Mr. Depp on line 3."

Instead he basically had the biggest stage for an individual in Hollywood, winning Best Actor, and gave that speech.

IDK MAN SEEMS PRETTY STRAIGHTFORWARD TO ME!

If the production company is so reluctant to get a few minorities on the payroll in that scenario then the problem is either too far gone or he isn't actually a big enough noise to be telling anyone anything, and he should shut his face accordingly.

14% of US population is 'African American', according to which - casting aside 'international' nominees for a moment - in a five man category they should get two nominations every three years. Do they manage that in any categories?

It's absolutely wank.
I watched it last night. I honestly thought I’d never see another film like Mother, where it finishes & you go ‘what the fuck did I just watch?’, but now I have. I liked it, but it’s really bizarre. Gave me some Midsommar vibes as well, if that helps to place it.

There were probably only 10 people in the screen, and two of them walked out about half an hour in, which isn’t all that surprising. Definitely seems like a film that pretentious media students would rave about though.

Oh, and the worst film I’ve seen is Lesbian Vampire Killers. My friend worked at the cinema when it came out so we had free tickets & we still almost walked out. Actually, we might have, I don’t remember for sure. Shite.

You do wonder how bad he will have to get before somebody steps in and stops him. He could make something nine hours long and utterly shit, but if it had three minutes of increasingly cringe 'Tarantino dialogue' in it people would give it a pass.

I really enjoyed Hateful Eight, but this just isn't a film and if it didn't have the stellar cast to enjoy or look god enough to eat it'd not just be his worst, but one of the worst films I've seen.

It must have been a lifetime achievement thing, there was nothing in the performance that deserved it.

It's like Scorcese winning for Departed. He's been around long enough that most people would assume he's already got one and there's no bonkers good performance they'll get backlash for ignoring.

I haven't watched OUATIH and I doubt I ever will. Hateful Eight was so bad he'd have to do something very special indeed to interest me.

So Parasite, it's a bit crap.

There are some moments of good in it, but I was ambivalent at best to all of the characters in it and worst of all it's just quite boring.

If Frozen 2 is anything to go by, it'll be 3-4 months after the DVD release that they put it on Disney +.... so you've got a while to wait yet.

I watched Split last night and quite enjoyed it. A little bit daft in places but that's okay, I thought McAvoy did a good job with a role that could have been very scenery-chew-y.

Decided to plough through a few films I’ve had lying about...

Secrets and lies was all a bit drab and has not aged well at all. Main female actor was just intolerably annoying. Avoid.

Arriety was absolutely great though. Really fun little film, probably one of my favourites of that genre. Definitely worth a watch.

Tonight was A Quiet Place. It does of course learn on some daft decisions by its characters but I did enjoy it.

I saw a thing the other day suggesting Krasinski for The Last of Us. Which would probably work just fine but is also a bit unimaginative given people basically just want the exact same as he did in this.

I accidentally kept my NOW TV Cinema Pass going and it's finally up at the end of the month. I've just watched Marathon Man. Takes a while to come together but I've never met a 70's Thriller I didn't like. Hoffman's in top gear in this. Bumbling and looking way too old to play a college student. I'm thinking he's never really looked young in anything past The Graduate. The opening car chase is very dumb. It's the most New York sequence I've ever seen committed to the screen.
