I always wonder about that because you hear so many people rely on their LTE plan over there for Netflix, etc. Much more than this part of the world.

They'll be fine when COMCAST release their Netflix internet package.

    I pay $45 a month for 150mpbs.

It was, I think, a 12 month price so I will be calling and threatening to move to fiber in the next month or so.

No other companies over here, so I cannot threaten anyone.

Internet prices seem really steep for you guys. I think we pay 6€ for 50mbps (in reality I think it's usually just over 40) with an uploading speed of 10 (could be 20 for all I know, but just checked and it said a bit over 10).

I just get internet as part of the fee you pay to the housing cooperative (or whatever you call it when you own your flat). It's not super fast though maybe 20mbps? or 30 maybe. I dunno, it's pretty much always fast enough to stream 3 things simultaneously while downloading something, so it's fine for me. I'm guessing it costs the building something like 8 quid per month and household maybe.

Some broadbands over here are only like £3, but you have to pay line rental as well which can be £13-£20.

No catch. Operators offer decent deals for apartment buildings. They do try to sell you all sorts of extras and they they’ll usually get pretty much everybody in the building on board.

Edit: It’s the same thing as Maz has.

And that gets you about 10mbs.

Thankfully, internet is getting quicker by the month here. 10years ago it was proper dial up shit.
Now, I pay $8 for about 18mbps, last I checked.

I haven't looked much into it, but I suspect the prices have to do with the geographical distance some countries like USA or Australia have to cover with fibre ducts. That can't be cheap. Whereas most of Europe, you're laying a few km's and done.

It'll probably be a big pipe being split up between tenants (or pooled?) with a fair usage policy.

After years of moaning about shit virgin internet speeds, I finally managed to convince my mum to upgrade to one of their faster packages.

Only once she agreed and we got it installed did it finally occur to me that it might be my laptop's wifi adapter rather than Virgin or their hub thing. Turns out it was both, sort of.

Previously I was getting about 40mb/s through ethernet and about 10mb/s through my laptop. Since the upgrade I was getting 100+ through ethernet.....about about 10mb/s through my laptop. God knows why my laptop's wifi router is so shit, but I've bought a USB 802.11ac wifi adapter and I'm now getting 125mb/s dl and 20mb/s ul.

    What an interesting post, Igor.

Nah dw I'm contributing to the cost, and cus our old contract was so shit it was basically the same price. It was more the middle-aged "I can't be arsed with sorting this out".
