This is definitely the case. Although, the word celebrity is very loose.
Social media, the expansion of the mass media market (i.e. thousands of TV / radio stations / films / artists) and televised sports has basically meant that 'someone you've seen in something somewhere = celebrity'. Talent is largely disconnected from the word celebrity these days, which is a shame.
If anything the contrary is true. Won a Nobel Prize for a groundbreaking discovery? Never heard of them. Said something stupid on a shit TV show, ‘oh yeah, I know him’.
It's all subjective, half the people in this thread I've never heard of. Take the Swedish dj as an example, I could have sat for hours guessing who he was and I'd never have got anywhere near but he seems fairly well known on here.
