2024 YR4 (The We're all Going to Die Thread)

Currently, the odds of impact sit at 2.4% (https://cneos.jpl.nasa.gov/sentry/de...des=2024%20YR4). How are we feeling about it? Should we go into panic mode or is it all a ruse by BIG SPACE?

I'm sure I read about that 2032 one last week and the odds were much less than 2.5%.

The odds will keep changing between now and then, depending on its trajectory.

Most likely to hit India if it does indeed hit Earth. Carry on.

Statistically speaking, how many years away are we from a plant killer?

There is no known civilization-ending impact that has been identified. The timescales for those are in the millions of years, so we should be good.

What a wild time that'll be if humans are still around in the run up to when it lands (assuming we can't Bruce Willis it).

I think that if someone dangerous enough starts looming, we will be able to Bruce Willis the hell out of it.

Deep down I knew all the Bruce Willis gags would be gone when I started scrolling, but I'm still upset.

Unless someone comes up with a better version of a meteorite landing movie (almost impossible I fancy), the gags will still be there in 1,000 years time.

I rewatched Armageddon a few months ago. The explosions budget was clearly ringfenced.

Fucking hell imagine the smell if it dispersed India into the atmosphere. The entire planet going nose blind. Absolutely worth it still, but something to consider if you were absolutely desperate to find a downside.
