5 second penalty for a false start makes me think that anyone at the sharp end would be better off just doing that rather than sitting in filthy air for the first stint, as Brundle has just pointed out.

Yeah that’s a ridiculous penalty. I’d just be scything up the inside on the fourth red, then taking the hit. Granted it’ll only happen once before they close the loophole but that’s a pretty fucking massive one.
wtf is that Ferrari on the straight. Rocket fuel
That got spicy real fast.
The penny is beginning to drop for Lando.
He is not your best mate when he's in the car.
Verstappen is a maniac.
That second one especially was outrageous.
Verstappen doing what he needs to do there clearly
If this isn’t a penalty for Verstappen then they’re 100% scared of Horner.
So big brain move for Norris is to not accept the place back then?
Shades of Schumacher black flag territory really. Something needs to be done.
He gets done for track limits as well?
Surely track limits gets removed if they person forcing you off gets a penalty?
The second incident is mental
I wouldn’t be shocked if Verstappen tries to just end Norris’ race now
Max is making the message clear. You Lando, are not getting by, no matter what.
Yeah, just wait for the pit stop. He will take him off.
Oh boy.
Heads have gone across the grid.
Sergio about to get told to bin it and bring out the safety car. Or one of the minions.
Yeah from one side or the other, there's going to be some safety car shenanigans here.
Can't watch but Maxipad getting two penalties
No one wants to hear the Russell reaction, give me the Lewis reaction.
Lando finishing 3rd will still do nothing to the championship. He could do with just pushing the the throttle and getting past Verstappen otherwise he won’t have a chance at the Ferraris
Ocon being behind the two Saubers is an effort. He’s completely thrown the towel in with this outfit.
I am not sure after this and last race he'll be the most confident in getting past Verstappen though.
Here we go, crash time.
Realistically Norris just isn't winning the championship, so I wonder if it's time for McLaren to start planning their strat around not losing the Constructors' to Ferrari.
I mean Verstappen is going to get p7 here at a minimum so I’m not even sure this penalty was the end of the world. His work was done when he made Leclerc get ahead of Norris and put Sainz miles clear
Scrap that he’s probably finishing ahead of Hamilton as well here
The play for Norris should be trying to get Verstappen a race ban on his license.
Watch the Mercs take each other out now Ferrari style.
Verstappen's tyres are fucked but I guess he's just planning to hold 6th/7th.
I’d be 2 stopping if I were McLaren here. They have a free stop at this point, nothing to lose
They'll go for the fastest lap stop and lose a tyre or something.
I see Lawson's been to the Max Verstappen school of leaving space on the outside.
How slow is Piastri compared to Norris? The bloke has much fresher tyres and Norris is still pumping in fastest laps
Based off of the hard tyre runs, Norris probably wins that at a canter if he’s not forced off the track and put miles behind the Ferraris
All said and done though, you'd argue Verstappen ends up 3rd without the penalties, so the gap would have been the same.
I dunno, that car looked shite on the hards after about 10 laps.
Norris is too much media training. Bleurgh.
What a fucking don.
Schumacher was given a 2-race ban in 1994 for a lot less than what Max has been up to.
5 seconds for jumping the start, give me strength. Should be a stop-go.
Current rules and enforcement of said rules in F1 is comically bad. I am sure any local indoor karting facility has better rules.
The mantra seems to be punish every little transgression, but give ridiculously light punishments for everything. Just encourages them all to act like whiny little boys.
Verstappen is dirty as hell and knows what he's doing. Senna was dirty but sparingly. Schumacher (M) was similar to Max. The thing these three share is a complete and unshakeable belief in their own untouchability. I think Senna's was a religious belief, with the others it's just incredible levels of arrogance. You go through all the other greats from Fangio to Clark, Stewart, Lauda, Prost and even to Alonso, Vettel and Hamilton and all of these had notable occasions when they stepped back and stepped off and compromised for the safety of others and general sense of the sport. With the above three there was/is no compromise. It's something that will catch up with Max at some point. It caught up with the others.
Yeah, jump starts typically get a drive through, don't they?
I know that stop-go and drive through are still on the hypothetical sanctions list but I have no idea when the last one was actually given. Years ago, probably. Everything is 5 seconds apparently. Max will have known this and deliberately jumped the start because it's worth it not to end up in 4th behind faster cars where the field spread alone will do you 5 seconds in a few laps anyway.
Jump starts used to be stop-go in the good old days.
The simple equation for Max right now is easy.
I will win, or we will not finish. Your choice.
Late 90's/early 00's Schumacher is indeed a good comparison. Unlike Senna where it all felt very based on emotion, with those two it feels very calculated after looking at how the rule book works.
Now if the two drivers were swapped in position, it would likely all be different.
I don't even think Verstappen has to be this fighty. He's still got the points advantage and Ferrari will eat into Norris more than him.
47 point swing in 4 races is way too much unfortunately. The spiciness came too late. Or rather it came at the right time but Norris didn't capitalise enough leading up to this. The deficit was 8 points per race not long back, now it's 12.
Lawson though.
Perez was an absolute cunt diving into whatever corner it was when there was clearly no space, so deserved every middle finger in the book. Spanish-speaking F1 twitter taking it with all their usual cool-headed grace I see.
It'll be tremendous when Lawson takes his seat too.
