    waterproof stuff

alright lads. I walked to work in pretty heavy rain yesterday, and on arrival it was clear that my waterproof coat wasn't particularly waterproof. most of the usual north face etc ones are quite short - is it possible to get decent waterproofs that are a bit longer, or does anything approaching knee length just make you look like Arsene Wenger failing to do up his zip / a flasher? Are wet legs just an inevitability? What's the score?

also my trainers were absolutely useless as well - do I need to invest in some fucking hiking boots to keep my feet dry? I thought leather Nike trainers would be pretty resistant but my socks begged to differ. Does aesthetically appealing casual footwear which also keeps water out exist? thanks bye

Cars are waterproof. Except for Volkswagens.

Rubber is waterproof. Anything else will fail eventually.

Anything properly waterproof just makes you sweat more so you're getting wet anyway.

The solution is a shower and locker at work.

As a former walker to work for 1 hour each way, I can confirm that there is no way of keeping your legs dry. You just have to find as comfortable a coat as you can and get on with it.

Shoes, you need a pair of solid old school trainers with no silly mesh or holes in them. Aesthetics you need to leave at the door.

If you're after waterproof footwear then I can recommend pretty much any of these.

I would save whatever money I had earmarked for a coat or whatever, buy the boots with it, and then just wear a bin bag with holes in it over my existing leaky coat.

Your best bet is to wear shorts when it’s raining because skin is waterproof and dries very quickly. Nothing worse than jeans or trousers being wet.

An umbrella will help with the trousers and better shoes will help with the shoes, or just keep a dry pair at work to wear through the day.

I'm not sure if it's the same in the UK, but the more expensive waterproof stuff from Decathlon is pretty good. I have a jacket, over-trousers (do they have a name) and light boots that all withstand monsoons pretty well, and they weren't stupidly expensive.

I currently have a Helly Hanson jacket for the first time in years I got in a sale and no matter how much it pisses it down when I walk the dog I am bone dry underneath, without being too hot. I have a waxed jacket too, a Barbour style knock off which is impervious to rain but as previously said makes you sweat in mild conditions, best kept for the depths of winter.
