If you hit the bit where the post and crossbar connects it counts double.

I do enjoy the never-ending crusade to find a replacement for penalties, which (if one team isn't good enough to win in 120 or 210 minutes) are a perfectly acceptable way of deciding a game.

I've never understood why "penalties aren't fair". Of course they are. They aren't nice. They're fucking unbearable in fact. But they are fair.

If anything they should just do away with extra time and go straight to penalties.

Decide it by most shots on target. Teams might not be happy to play out 0-0s then.

Or they'd be happy to continually fire in soft as shit but very accurate efforts at the keeper from 40 yards.

Penalties are the best way anyone has ever come up with and the best way by a country mile.

No team in the possession age is going to play that way. Allardyce would have 20 years ago, and probably actually gone on to manage Inter and Real after unrivalled success, but we're safe now.

Did they ever trial the hockey style run from the halfway line and score method or did I imagine that?

Not that that would be any better.

Penalties work well, because they are still football, but with all the bullshit taken out. The question: can you kick the ball into the goal?

People don't like them because they erroneously think all the bullshit is football as much as that is.

The only thing I might change is to score them out of 11 rather than five (including rewarding teams who haven't had a man sent off by giving them the extra kick).

I was thinking earlier that maybe you go with 11, but then I do like the sharp nature of a 5 man job.

Isn't "but look at how many times we've hit the crossbar" just how RAWK cranks used to claim middling Liverpool teams were actually, if you look at the stats very selectively and turn off certain parts of your brain, actually the best team in the league?

United fans could start doing it but for flouncy dives not given by VAR.

As soon as you start rewarding anything other than goals (and possibly fair play) then the whole sport loses what makes it great.

I think there was a pretty low time limit to get the ball over the line. Could be why they’re complaining.

Edit. Could also be what Phonics said. I do have some memory of seeing a clip with a clock running down.

I think they are still just about in the box. All those other lines are do fuck with the perspective.

From google "Instead of the traditional penalty kick shootout where players take shots from 12 yards out, MLS opted for a true shootout. Players started 35 yards from goal and had five seconds to take a shot against a goalkeeper who was free to move up off his line. "

Guess they are appealing for the time and just hoping? Same way keepers today just throw a hand up for anything.

Definiitely going down after that. Might be the worst goal I've ever seen, by a player who should have been off the pitch a minute earlier.

Leeds may beat Brentford but I can't see Burnley beating Newcastle. Everton will just about survive I reckon, but it won't be of their own doing.

I thought Everton were as good as down weeks ago. Wasn’t expecting them to probably stay up at this stage by not even winning. Just the usual media wankery?

I’d fancy Everton to get something against arsenal but I think they’ve won there once in about 30 years.

Super Frank deliberately leaving it to then so they fuck arsenal over

Burnley taking the lead here changes things. If they win then it's pretty much a straight shootout between Everton and Leeds.

They should decide it on who has hit the crossbar most this season.

The only flaw in this plan is that it actually requires us to win a game of football.
