Ultimately, it's really common that people don't act "normally" and say "normal" things in the light of this kind of thing happening. I see it all the time at work, where a parent is told their child has some horrendous diagnosis and they do, say and ask all sorts of apparently strange things.
Mostly it comes from password re-use and a compromised site somewhere
