He's not playing like he was early on in the season when he was routinely "Quarterbacking" for Son and racking up assists, but that's not really his game. He just needs the ball somewhere vaguely near the goal.

Maybe it's Yevrage itself that unites these generations of England teams.

Midfield balance was all wrong. Phillips had a great game again Croatia and I'm sure he will be useful if we play any other decent sides but we needed something else.

For me it should have been Phillips and Mount off after 55-60 minutes with Grealish and Bellingham coming on. Then give it 10 minutes to see what's happening and then change the front three up.

Either that or drop Rice in between the centre backs and play 343. We looked so ordinary.

I think he has been told specifically not to drop back and get involved in the build up. Even 4-5 years ago before he took on the creative burden for Spurs he was dropping back more than this. Its all a bit strange, but at the same time typical of England in a major tournament.

Don't want to peak too early lads.

Or probably at all in England's case.

Above all, we need to stop looking to Sterling for answers. It's too obvious and easy to defend. As we've seen, he doesn't offer much support for Kane either. He's a spark but waiting for him to do the one piece of magic leads to a lot of wasted effort.

On the evidence of their first game I would much rather face Spain than anyone from group f.

Spain vs England would be the worst match to ever happen but they’re worse at penalties than we are.

Know I'm biased, but we needed Ollie Watkins upfront last night. He brings a lot that Kane doesn't and gets you up the pitch. No good having a player of Kane's finishing ability if he's not getting on the ball. Set pieces are terrible too. Where's Ward-Prowse? What a waste of a squad place White was.

Agree with Andy. Bellingham needs to start.

    Pickford
    James
    Stones
    Mings/Maguire
    Chilwell
    Phillips/Rice
    Bellingham
    Sancho
    Mount
    Grealish
    Calvert-Lewin

Be ruthless and give it a try in a dead rubber.

That'd probably be my starting 11 aside from the fact I'd put Kane in. If you've got Bellingham, Grealish and Sancho on we'll actually create chances for Kane.

All the focus being on Kane is quite funny. He isn't Ronaldo, he can't force the whole team to be better. He's been shit because everyone around him has been.

We should definitely be focusing on bringing in more creative outlets, but... Southgate gonna Southgate.

He's more likely to take 2021's equivalent of playing Rooney on the left wing; drop him deeper and use him as the play maker. You lose alot of his finishing ability, but that's useless when he's stood doing fuck all anyway. He didn't have the most assists in the league by accident last season.

It's good there's still no reason why we can't win this tournament, I'd be worried otherwise.

Is there a more hateable team than France?

Kante aside who is both likely up for the Ballon d'Or and by all accounts a top bloke, the rest of them want a good thumping.

What does this do for operation don't win the group? Seems a bit of a fly in that particular ointment. Germany to beat Portugal and Hungary, Portugal to beat France by a few, France go home?

I doubt Germany win. If their game wasn’t in Munich against Hungary, I’d fancy them to go out with one point at best. Scotland could really do with Portugal winning this game. I can just see them winning on Tuesday and still somehow going out on 4 points.

These past two days is surely the happiest he's ever been. He was borderline ecstatic by his standards before last night's game.

He's just forgotten Grealish's name. "The winger from Villa." I think he's been drinking.
