It was the right decision from Masi from the perspective of the sport as a spectacle/business. Probably wrong on every other level but lol, whatever. As Pepe said, Spa was the real crime this season. Whilst Hamilton had no real hope he would have been better going full road block and taking his chances in a collision, should definitely have defended the inside line as he knew Max would be throwing it up there. I suppose it's the one time when you don't necessarily want to live to fight another day.
I assume the race director has absolute discretion to do whatever he wants, otherwise double lol if this ends up being lawyered back a lap and Hamilton wins.
So looks as if the Mercedes higher ups are currently discussing the rules before coming for interviews.

For me one of the worst parts of the season has been finding out that, despite always seeming very sensible, Damon Hill appears to be a complete balloon.

Mercedes protest is that Verstappen overtook Hamilton who was essentially the safety car at that point. It won't matter but that's actually probably their best case.
For all they probably have valid grounds, I wouldn't be wasting time and energy on appeals if I were Mercedes. I would be collecting the constructors' trophy and then diving straight back to Brackley to throw everything into the 2022 car.

This is exactly what we didn’t want. I highly doubt they’ll change the result, but a crap race director has soured someone’s title no matter who ends up with it.
If they ping Verstappen for 5 seconds, other than being one of the funniest things a sporting body has done for many a year, they'll have instantly undone all of the positive PR this race/battle has generated. So it obviously isn't going to happen. What Verstappen is doing [other than being an arsehole] trying to run side by side with the safety car [which is what Hamilton is at that point] is anyone's guess. I recall someone else being a bit fast and loose with the rules behind the safety car back in the day.
I don't want to say we don't want it to be decided off track, as literally every F1 championship ever has been decided off track, but we don't want it to be decided off track.
Maybe they just should disqualify them both from the championship for accumulated shenanigans, and give it to the equally deserving Valtteri Bottas.
A very side note, Carlos Sainz's third place there sent him above both his teammate and also Lando Norris into 5th. Really strong season from him.

I don't think they'd change the result of a normal race like this let alone the title decider.
They had said he was during the safety car.
Belgium 2008 comes to mind, and a few others maybe, but that was the Max Mosley/Bernie era, different times.
Surely they won't overturn their own decision, but what happens if/when a legal challenge is made?
