Will you be maintaining your McManaman watch for that one?

Weird thing about that game is whilst I can recall quite a lot of the major details of it, I couldn't say with any confidence what the score was (and actually my inkling was wrong looking it up). Should have remembered though, having seen the major protagonists.

Never realised quite how similar the echos with the more recent semi-final failure were.

Jerkan's handball for Germany's penalty is so ludicrous. He just palms it away for no obvious reason.

Of course. You can't be too vigilant.

He's not much better or worse than the rest of the midfield, I'd mostly blame it on Venables but the commentators don't half bang on about McManaman. It was a BIG RISK to bring him off after 109 minutes of the Spain game, presumably because they didn't think whoever was taking over on the right flank would have the accuracy to hit the first man with every cross.

As I said in another post the whole midfield was crap really, through a combo of individuals not stepping up and some WTF tactics from El Tel.

Ince was probably the most accomplished player there. Gascoigne and Platt seemingly past their best, Anderton was a decent right mid, McManaman obviously improved enough to find himself a regular feature at Madrid. It's no wonder we could never hold onto the ball.

There weren't a lot of other midfield options in the squad either but then given Venables apparent hatred of substitutions that probably doesn't make much difference.

Suker is such a cool finisher. What a lovely player he was.

edit: Such a stupid red card Stimac.

IIRC he was mega against Germany, particularly in ET (did he cross the ball for Gazza to miss?) so maybe they were onto something.

Of course, this could be completely wrong so I may watch it to find out.

Wait, are you all discussing the euro 96 coverage as if you don't know the results?

I genuinely don't remember every game or result. I know who made it to the final and England's results but otherwise there are some actual surprises.

Hmmm. You might be right. Dortmund's league pedigree isn't quite there. Even when they were winning European Cups they were doing it as the third best team in Deutschland. What classifies as England's Classic? Is it the obvious choice of United vs Liverpool?

I suppose you just want football matches to be about the football and not a NARRATIVE for its own sake, do ya?

Borussia Monchengladbach would be a better historical rival for Bayern, but they've been shit for forty years so they've basically just invented this to stop people realising that the league is irrelevant.

Bayern have won the league 29 times. In second place is nurnberg with 9, Dortmund with 8 and then Schalke with 7.

Reus is crippled and looks like a lesbian seagull. Turns out playing loads of U-7 regens against The Empire wasn't a great idea. Zero guile from Dortmund but half their team is dead.

Keeper should have stopped the chip really.

Dortmunds whole thing is to play batshit football with a bunch of promising talent until The Reich turns up and it's time to remember who saved them from going bust, so chuck that game.
Then at the end of the season the good striker/winger is sold off to huge profit, likely to The Reich. A young talent is brought in to replace them and the cycle begins again.
