No, it wasn’t fast tracked. This is technology that was established before covid came along. And all the “ingredients” of a vaccine are standard components which have been tested over and over again.
The data supporting them is just as good as if the trials had taken the typical 3-5 years.

Had a very depressing talk with my aunt about this. She's a worrier (completely innocent, no side or views) and no matter how patiently I talk about it, she just won't accept that omicron is less severe or even that vaccination will mitigate its effects. She's effectively in a mindset where she NEEDS this to carry on because she's spent the last two years being scared shitless about it, and if it ends, that's time wasted.

IDK why people spend so much time agonising over it all. You can't change it so why worry? I have never watched an "update" so far and I barely know what the rules are beyond the bare minimum I need to get by and for work. I have zero clue what cases or hospitalisations are doing at any given time.

That's sort of similar to me, albeit I appreciate our output is different. I'd rather know how bad things are and/or have a sensible view of what's coming than not and it dawned on me relatively early on that the best way to do that was to find out for myself. I know fuck all about science (clearly) but I am pretty good with numbers and interpreting them, which is all I've really used throughout this. The back of a fag packet told me that we were closer to Italy in weeks than Whitty reckoned and that herd immunity without a vaccine was one of the dumbest ideas ever, and it's sort of gone from there.
On the subject of your aunt, I genuinely feel for her. There have been millions of people who've been utterly terrified by the messaging around this (fine sans a vaccine, absolutely not fine after we had one) and I'm not sure what it'll take to bring them back to the land of properly functioning humans again.

I don't think I've ever been massively anxious over any of this. I was mainly concerned about the family but know there's only so much you can do. I wasn't shitting bricks once the deaths started getting up there and I'm certainly not bothered about where we're at. Like Jimmy, the data's just been nice to rifle through. Finding out who this virus tends to finish off, where it's spreading and, in general, finding out how the virus is changing over time.
More people are still dying than there were on average in 2019 but it's night and day from the peak of this.
