These fucking inbreds are here by the millions.

As we said back in March/April time, society's reluctance to let mature take its course on this is being shown up to be laughable. The final victory lap lol will be if the mutation leads to a vaccine failure.

    Fucking open the clubs.

There's a 12 year old starting raves, mate, and he'll only be a little taller than you. Stop whining and take matters into your own hands.

Being rather uneducated (in the field of science), I do wonder how much of this new virulent strain is down to the actual strain being easier to catch (as they're sternly telling us) or actually a reflection of people not being so careful with social distancing, going to work, going shopping, school being open, socialising and all that which makes the R value go up.

I presume it's a bit of both, but not a clue what the ratio split would be.

One thing for sure is we're currently the lepers of Europe.

It's not thought to be more virulent, just more transmissible. Virulence basically refers to how unwell it makes people.

They are comparing spread of this strain against other strains over the same time period so the theory about poorer concordance with restrictions doesn't really make sense.

Being rather uneducated (in the field of mathematics), I do wonder if they are able to up the estimated 500k vaccinations per week. Is it limited by availability of the current vaccine, logistics getting it to places, or people/centres to administer it?

They'd struggle to cover-up the adverse cases if they go above that figure.

Vaccines are usually given under a PGD (basically a blanket prescription which covers all doses given in the UK). This one doesn't have a PGD yet so every dose needs an individual prescription and everybody having it needs to be consented. This takes about 10-15 minutes and requires a large number of registered prescribers (there aren't that many prescribers and they are mostly tied up doing their main job). This is what is slowing down the rate it can be given from what I've seen.

Once they get a PGD in place it'll start going much faster I think.

I think it's also only being given in hospitals at the moment because of the difficulties with storage; that will change when one of the other two vaccines comes into use.

    It can't happen soon enough.

I recall earlier this year a government spokesperson saying herd immunisation would need circa 70% of the population to have caught covid and have antibodies to be effective. This was before they realised the short-lived covid antibodies in most people.

But I'm presuming we won't need 70% to receive the vaccination before we get some sort of firm grip on this? My thinking is that if we can get the majority of 60+ and the vulnerable vaxed then things might start looking better. Not sure what percentage that would be mind.

I'm looking at you Dr Tory when I ponder this.

Suggesting Boris would use a supposed new variant as political cover is one thing, but surely Chris Whitty and that other bloke wouldn't get up and talk bollocks in that way?

I'm no scientist etc. but the idea this variant or others that behave in the same way aren't present anywhere but England, is laughable. And if you were going to close borders chaps, you're about 12 months too late.

According to this German bloke's twitter feed, the reason it's a 'UK variant' is that we have the best labs and scientists and are actually looking for variants, and having discovered one, actually reported it to WHO - unlike our Chinese friends this time last year.

Sometimes you can just be too world-beating for your own good.

I've got European customers seething with fury, almost in tears of frustration today because the road transport isn't leaving the UK and they have to take all their orders by the more expensive air method. What do you want me to do, fellas, wave a magic wand and cure the virus? Should have ordered earlier.

You can almost taste the angst in the air on TTH (and by extension, the country) today, look at the aggression and [above-average] negativity in each thread

You had it good whilst we were blowing ourselves/each other up in the muslim world but the chickens have come home to roost and the western man's inexperience with hardship will now take centre stage.

They do need to up the pace, at 500k dosed in what, 2/3 weeks you're looking at about a year to run through enough of the population. We'll also inevitably get the good news 6 months in people who've had both doses of the current one months ago are now catching COVID again.
