Possibly. It does say only 18 recoveries here:

Yeah, the cases started on the 24th Feb, 2 weeks ago. They'll be having some deaths soon.

Korea is the one to look at. It's been there for ages, and at time of going to press killed 50 from 7,313. In Italy it's killed 366 from almost exactly the same number of cases. Deaths are going to be recorded in both those countries, so who do you think is better at capturing the true number of cases.

Every other country is being infected via Italy as well (even ones next to China). They have, like China and to a far greater extent than Korea, obviously let it get way out of control at a very early stage. Other countries need to learn from this.

Personally I think we're in a solid position here in the UK, being a load of standoffish protestants to begin with. Italy is founded upon extended families gathering together every day.

The trick is to look after yourself and anyone you give a shit about and leave it there. Governments (and therefore experts) only look on this as an opportunity to get rid of a load of pensions.

My best guess is some balance of the below three things:

    1) Bad luck (the virus must have got in from China very early, before people were really on full alert for this, and gone around big time before they were)
    2) Chaotic government and dogshit decision-making (as afflicts Italy in all arenas)
    3) What I said above about the fact that it's a culture based around extended families staying together, constantly visiting each other etc. Italian men typically stay living with the parents until marriage or even their parents' death. They kiss for greetings, they go out and meet people and have coffee together, like, every day. It's a far more social culture than ours. That can't help at all.

Case in point, the wankers all making a break for home before the lockdown could be in effect.

Are the skiing regions on lockdown? A bloke I work with flew over there on Friday and he has the worst luck with holidays ever.

I read that the ski resorts were closing (although I don't know if that means some ski resorts, or all of them).

We'll all be on lockdown within a fortnight so I wouldn't worry.

As Mellin mentioned, there's an absolute killing to be made on the stock market over this.

I've halted work on my house to keep the savings free to go balls deep when we hit lockdown.

There was talk the other day of all 'non-essential staff' (like me) being barred from the naval base should the government step up its pointless panic measures. I could go work with my uncle and get two wages for the duration.

What are we actually meant to do of we come down with a cold? Are we actually meant to be taking 2 weeks off just in case?

How do you go about getting it checked? Call 111 and they send someone round? That'll take longer than the 2 week self-isolation they demand anyway.

It's something along the lines of:

    1. DO NOT GO TO SEE YOUR GP OR ANY OTHER MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL
    2. Phone 111
    3. ???
    4. Survive

If your symptoms match then 111 will refer you for a test, the advice against going to GP's is for all the schlubs who just have a cold (hi Lewis) so they don't clog up the system or worse expose themselves to someone who actually has it.

Which is great, and step 4 is the obvious end goal, but it's clear as mud. I can't get to the bottom of what I'm actually meant to do if I wake up with a sniffle tomorrow.

I imagine DO NOT GO TO WORK... JUST IN CASE will be in there somewhere, but it's completely unrealistic when people have additional worries like 'I don't get sick pay' and 'I have a Mortgage' to worry about.

If I woke up feeling ill-but-not-too-ill, I would call in and say I wasn't sure so offer to work from home. If they said NOT A CHANCE COME IN HERE RIGHT NOW then, well, I don't know really.

We only get sick pay on discretion but there's 1300 staff and a bit of a situation developing. We can't work from home for obvious reasons but they can't be paying us all to stay away and do nothing.

There's been dialogue of people purposefully coming in and spreading it around if we get a case, should they refuse to pay people in full.

Yep. This is why our office becomes cough central. If it's not bad enough to bed you, you're coming in. The American attitude seems more tuned towards the opposite which might actually do them some favours.

I do wish they kept up the regional statistics of this and how many cases are coming back from travel. It's just numbers now rather than data. The South Koreans name them which is .... a step too far.

It's all part of the 24 hour news circus. Same reason why you have 'Infected' and 'Died' readily available but 'recovered' isn't reported.

Did a quick calculation of our tested to cases ratio. 1.2% of tested people give out positive results. Probably because just a fraction will be those close contacts of confirmed cases they need to track down.

I rate my chances of going to the Algarve on 28 March as <5%, but everyone else on the trip seems to think it will be fine. Either I am a significantly better forecaster than them, or I'm a walking Daily Express.

It's going to be a bloodbath this week. The Dow's collapsing and oil's completely tanked. I'd be looking at it now. Don't buy a thing. Short.

Having been stuck on 16 cases for three weeks, some dim rich bird returned from Italy and didn't tell the authorities. She proceeded to contract herself and then spread to her sisters, her driver and maid. Now upto 31.

Latest message from the boys upstairs...
The Ministry of Health would like to inform:
Vietnam has detected 3 more new cases of Covid-19 infection. The Government, Ministry of Health and local governments are working closely to review and localize and prevent epidemics from spreading in the community according to the planned plan. All for the safety of the people.
The subjects who have close contact with the cases are isolated, closely monitored.
People should follow the popular guidelines on prevention and control of Covid-19 disease; There should be no overreaction.
Be alert, strong and united to win the disease!
