It wouldn't even be worth pursuing if it was. We've had 11 months of this now, which will be at least 15 by the time it's over. It's time to shift the focus from those who were vulnerable to the disease to those who've had to give up a lot to protect them.

How in the fuck, for example, can a left leaning paper be comfortable with the idea of kids missing even more actual school? It's madness. Absolute madness.

It's not even liberal, which is exactly the problem with it.

The Guardian piece is laughable. Quincy becoming an expert on what the stage 3 trial of an MRNA vaccine involves is also laughable. I hate everyone.

The Guardian is as bad as the Daily Mail. None of it's news, they're just there to confirm what their research says their readers already believe.

I'd expect floppy bullshit from the Guardian, that's their usual role in life, but in that editorial they've moved far beyond that essentially to become the anti-vax journal of record. Worse, they are too cowardly to set out what 'Zero-Covid? Yes, Prime Minister' would actually involve (six to nine months of pointlessly waiting in lockdown for cases to hit the hundreds while nobody dies).

    It's straight dishonesty.

The one thing I'll say is this disease is still a moving goalpost. If that mutates in a direction we're not prepared for, we're not done.

I was thinking more about becoming more deadlier to younger people or could become resistant to treatment.

Someone go and find all of the posts from August where Magic was mocking the "so called second wave" that hadn't happened.

I mean there is a risk it mutates and becomes deadlier (but then it's less effective as a 'virus' as it kills the host) or it becomes more virulent (which likely means fewer deaths). I don't think we need to stop all return to normality for it though.

Was listening to the radio this morning & someone was moaning about how things are opening up too fast and we need to aim for zero Covid. How long do people think that will take? For zero Covid I reckon you'd have to close down everything but food shops & even then you'd be looking at 9-10 months. The only time zero Covid was reachable is if you closed down quickly initially like New Zealand(are they going to stay closed off forever?) at this point for somewhere like the UK it's a fantasy.

These people NEVER cite what would be required to achieve zero/very low covid.

The truth is of course that in order to sustain an endless lockdown you would need to bring in things like UBI, bail out enormous sectors of the economy ad infinitum, institute loads of state control over personal freedom and pretty much everything else, which is of course what the authoritarian end of British socialism (a fringe group in the general public, but very strong/dominant in academia) actually desires, so it's opportunism. But they can't say that in public because people will stop taking them seriously, so they have to hide behind 'the science'.

See also: net zero/zero carbon. I think a more straight-forward explanation is that most modern left-wing thought sees 'the economy' and other aspects of normal life in the abstract, so, rather than trying to bring in communism by stealth, they offer an indefinite furlough scheme and wonder what more do people want. The right is a bit similar in how they have pushed lockdown vs the economy, as if there would have been no downturn[s] under Sweden-like circumstances, but residual conservatism gropes towards the meaningful stuff occasionally.

What happened to Magic? I'm pretty sure I stopped posting for a while (2016/2017ish) then came back and he was seen as a 'top' poster, but now he comes across as fully braindead. Anybody (@Lewis) have a timeline of events to help explain?

More virulent means it makes you more ill. Virulence refers to the severity of illness the virus causes in the host (it doesn't refer to how transmissible it is). Politicians have been constantly using this word wrongly.

Also I was reading about the "more deadly = less successful, evolution favours mutations which cause virus' to be less deadly" thing the other day as that's also what I believed.

Apparently it's really not true or at least nowhere near that straightforward.

The Spanish flu came back with a deadlier second variant didn't it? Albeit not one which would have been able to evade modern vaccines.

I think a lot of people are severely underestimating just how great these vaccines are. By far the most important aspect of public policy over the next six months is to try and coerce literally everyone 18+ into taking them. It needs to be made shameful to refuse the vaccine.

Presumably this would apply alot more strongly to something that fucks you up within 24 hours or so? Or is only contagious during the worst of it? Covid taking 4 weeks to kill, with you being contagious for most of it, would make it unlikely in this case, right?

Let me run some numbers and I'll get straight back to you.

Also, I think it's fair to say that myself, Jimmy and Harvey are generally regarded as the most intelligent posters on this forum. And I'm OK with that responsibility.
