Still my favourite Phil Elverum album. The whole thing is only twenty five minutes long and it's the perfect pick-me-up.

Prompted by Spikey's thread. Forgot how good this song is. Jesse Lacey probably only a lesser nonce compared to Ian Watkins' offending too.

I should know better but I still pressed play.

Sounds like someone having a stroke while trying to learn an instrument.

Mid 2000s emo, widely scoffed at, produced a load of really good stuff (in amongst a load of crap). The song I just posted, particularly the two minute climax, is just peak rock opera.

I can see why it might turn people off aesthetically but I reckon it's pretty much a perfect album

I very secretly liked MCR at the time that came out (among the various very secret things I was up to). Not sure the sound has translated across 15 years though, listening now. I find myself wanting a cleaner sound than the screaming and choking on the guitars in it, and I think his style of singing has been left in the 2000s as well.

For me the only bits that haven't aged well are the cabaret bits towards the end. Even then "Teenagers" gets off because it's a banger, and "Mama" because it's got an outrageously good Liza fucking Minnelli feature on it.

Okay, last night I stumbled on an AI project where it tries to create songs from artists. Most of it is nightmare fuel but it weirdly does alright with Rick Astley.

Karenn have finally released *that* song from the end of their 2014 boiler room set. Their live sets are all "improvised"/off the cuff but I reckon they've been constantly inundated with people asking "OMG what's that song" and attempted to recreate it.

Anyway, it's nowhere near as good and is actually pretty fucking boring. Goes along with the trend of them being pretty much the best live act I've seen but just a run of the mill techno act in the studio. I think everything ends up too polished when they have time to think about it. Shame.

They didn't keep the percussion that starts at 58:40 in the studio version. that was what made it a winner imo. but honestly any track automatically sounds better if you're listening to it on a youtube boiler room stream

I only know Magnolia Electric Co., the one that song is off. It's good. He even went to the effort of drinking himself to death a decade later to make it sound even sadder.

I gave it a background listen and thought it was ok. Mostly seemed to be closer to his electronic stuff which I am not crazy about (most of it). Much prefer Carrie & Lowell-type efforts.

Some current stuff I've been listening to:

    - Ugly Casanova / Sharpen Your Teeth - this is the guy from Modest Mouse
    - Andy Shauf / Darker Days
    - Craig Finn / Faith in the Future - solo stuff from the guy in The Hold Steady
    - Taylor Swift / Folklore - great album
    - Mary Epworth - Dream Life

Also looking forwards to the solo album from Matt Berninger (from The National)

None of my new buys are current but I'm always playing catch up.

    Mogwai - Every Country's Sun
The Future of the Left - The Plot Against Common Sense
Prodigy - Music for the Jilted Generation
Protomartyr - Under Colour of Official Right

It's not even similar to Age of Adz, though, because it's mostly drum machines and bleep bloops. It sounds quite like the random instrumental albums he's released over the years: Enjoy Your Rabbit and Aporia.

Takes a few listens, but there are definitely some top, top Sufjan tracks on there. The title track is fantastic, as is Tell Me You Love Me (posted above). A lot of it is very samey, however, so it doesn't rank highly in his catalogue overall. I'd give it 7/10 probably.

The new Mountain Goats album is pretty good and the one from Songhoy Blues is banging. There's another I want to check out from a band called Muzz who are the singer from Interpol and some other geezers. Not had a chance to listed yet.

Also on rotation: Fleetwood Mac (Rumours), Isobel Campbell + Mark Lanegan (Hawk) and Eels (Earth To Dora). First two are great but the Eels one is a bit meh. They're one of those bands who are up and down, but still one of my faves.

I think I was going to get a ticket for a show on that tour but scrunched my face up at it being about forty quid. Did he at least have a load of stuff/people on stage that made you go "fair enough, that must cost a bit to cart around"?

The John Darnielle talk reminded me of this, which he's a bit of a legend on the last minute or so of. Banger the whole way through though.

Highly recommend these lesser-known EPs too, if you want more JD:

Kaki King and John Vanderslice are both great in their own right too
