I guess Japan are in it because Brazil has (I think) the largest Japanese population outside of Japan, or at least a significant community, and Qatar are in it because they gave passports to loads of Brazilians to make their national side competitive.

    That's next year.

What I can't get my head around is that they played it back to back a few years ago, I assumed for some calendar/year moving reasons, but now they are doing the same thing again to get it on to the Euros schedule - I think the federation centenary may have had something to do with it but you'd think they'd be able to organise themselves better than having a supposedly quadrennial tournament 4 times in 6 years.

They really have botched it with the date move (it belongs in February) and the expansion to 24 teams. The bottom third of the teams will be absolute dross.

They're just finding any old excuse to slot more of them in for money. Africa enjoys the same thing.

And everyone is surprised when players are all knackered by February. Rather than a winter break they just need to all be on the beach from 1 May to 1 August.

Well, at least the next World Cup fits with that idea . . .

Club football should certainly be done with by mid-May at the latest, particularly if it starts in early August.

Argentina play Santa Cruz in a few hours. They were awful the first game. Messi will never win another major honour for the them. They are awful and he does not put enough work in for the team.

I'm sure the commentators for the penalty last night were still saying that The Little Magician has done it again regardless.

I was waiting on Jamaica the other night and it was only at full time I realised it was the Gold Cup I was watching, for some beyond daft reason I thought they were in the Copa America because they were facing El Salvador. That's special, right?

    Here is my preview:

    - Egypt will win.
    - Gael Bigirimana (ok) and Saido Berahino (wtf!) are playing for Burundi.
    - Tanzania are dons.
    - Ivory Coast are now shit. It was good while it lasted.
    - Clarence Seedorf is the manager of Cameroon. I don't think the world is ready for that.
    - Zimbabwe have players named: Talent, Knowledge, Divine, Teenage (he is 23), Knox, Marvellous, and Edmore. Presumably they are hoping for a team defined by nominative determinism.
    - Egypt will win.

He is doing the usual host nation messiah thing of trying to run the game at walking pace from far too deep. Eto'o used to do this, it's maddening. Just get up top and be clinical ffs.

Seems to happen for a lot of top forwards stuck at mid-level nations. Lewandowski plays like that too.

This game is enjoyably helter skelter. Zimbabwe have a couple of players with a decent touch, but zero composure or decision making in the final third.

Thankfully Gabon haven't qualified so I don't have to watch Aubameyang's tragic attempt at doing the same thing for the 80th one of these in a row.

Mind blowing team selection by Boothroyd. Should be sacked before the final game out of sheer bewilderment.
