    The best of... The Prodigy

Was thinking of doing a series like this for a while, and the discussion following Keith's death last night has kick-started things.

So, The Prodigy. What's your favourite track and album? When did you first get into them or did they totally fly over your head?

I'm listening to Music for the Jilted Generation on the way to work and Poison - No Good - One Love is an outstanding series of tracks.

Favourite track is pretty difficult. Probably Poison right now, but that'll change by the end of the day.

If this thread goes well we'll do Robbie Williams next.

It’s one of their better tracks, but this video was pretty mind-blowing when i first watched it when i was learning how to produce: https://youtu.be/eU5Dn-WaElI

I'm not sure i could deal with the whistles in 90s dance culture. That'd get annoying very quickly. It's probably worse than 'woop woop' coming out for no reason, although at least that is so incredibly shit that it's actually kinda funny.

I saw them in (what my brain thinks is) 1997 and hearing something other than their set was not a problem during the concert or indeed for several day afterwards. But yes, wankers with whistles were very annoying, thankfully all the drugs really took the edge off.

I imagine it was amazing. There should be some pretty banging hardstyle/breakbeat sets at Glasto this year to commemorate him. They were meant to play, but not sure what'll happen with that. Liam could at least do a DJ set.

Saw them last time they were up here with Public Enemy. Been looking back at some videos and they were electric. I don't think it's possible to phone that music in.

Offy, you should watch that video I posted, especially if you're interested in music production which I vaguely remember you saying you are

I was surprised by most of that. Now I can't not hear Bulls on Parade.

That was the craziest one, I wonder if he figured that out on his own or if he knew that that's where the sample was from

Writing credits on the song, probably. Makes you wonder how sample-heavy songs make any money back.

I think quite a few samples go through without bothering to get them approved. It definitely happens these days, and I imagine it happened a lot more in the 90s before the internet could do anything.

The guy in the YouTube video may have used www.whosampled.com as opposed to doing it all himself, which I doubt anybody could actually do.

They don't. Not for the artist(s) anyway. All their money comes from touring and live shows.

It just makes me realise how good an ear you need for samples to pull this off.

Always Outnumbered, Never Outgunned deserves more shine. It doesn't flow as well as the earlier albums, but it has some amazing tracks.
