That would mean 24 people pay £5 a year to keep it up to scratch. The Ads would cover the hosting and bandwidth. Right? I'm game for that. Can we not have a forum bank account or something that we donate to?

I see you're lurking SvN. What's your take on Raoul's points?
As generous as Mike and Baz are to host the website, I dislike the idea of a member being responsible for paying for hosting. What happens if they suddenly die in a car crash? Or Baz gets banned, pissed off and takes the board down? Or decides he can't afford the hosting any more?
I think we should lean towards a community funded board that has a few people in charge of hosting to make sure that we're not relying on individuals. We should be self sufficient, not relying on hand outs. I'd also rather keep the board ad free, this is the first I've heard of trading adspace for the server.
In terms of the pirated forum software - I can understand while we're currently using it. A license is not cheap, and requires ongoing costs, but if people were willing to contribute enough to pay for it (on an ongoing basis) then there's absolutely no reason why we shouldn't be using it.
Raoul is absolutely right that using outdated software will inevitably cause security issues. Old versions of Wordpress, for instance, are hacked for fun these days, and we may very well eventually end up in the same position as TD - but we're some way off that right now. However, that doesn't mean we should wait until it is an issue before we do something.
But it's already paid for
I'm a twit
If there is a serious discussion to be had on paying for a licence then I'll happily chip in. If I didn't have this place the boredom of work would kill me.
That community-funded board sounds like a beautiful dream.
Socialism in action, that.
I agree with the principle, however.
I can get on this place at work so I love it.
Next Payment: £69.98 inc.VAT (Biennial Renewal) - Due 06/09/2016
Depending on how much bandwidth is used (only time will tell) the hosting could be reduced from the Standard to the Lite option. Standard is £70 for two years (the maximum you can pay at once is two years) whereas Lite is £30.
Lite is far less webspace (500MB, whereas now we have 2.5GB), but again, I don't know how much will be used.
But to answer your question, another 12 months has already been paid for.
EDIT: If you're thinking he's saying he's paid £70 but we've only just moved here so there really should be 2 years lease paid for, I paid for the hosting when I set this up. I told Mike to offer the hosting to phonics, cos there was talk of setting up a new forum and of paying for it. I offered to host it, and continue paying for the server, so long as I get the ad revenue. I'm not too fussed about that, to be honest, but it would be really annoying to see this hosting go to waste, really.
I'm a twit
So why isn't Baz running the show? I hope he at least has complete immunity.
Do you log in every time you come here, @ScousePig? Why not just tick the 'remember me' option and stay logged in? Would that not help solve your problem here as well?
And to think he's playing a key role in our children's future.
Just pay for the legit version, Christ. As has been said, the contributions would be there in an afternoon.
My problem with the unread posts seems to be the opposite.
Example: I come to site at 13:00 on my phone, there's 23 posts with unread messages. I use the 'go to first unread post' link in the ones I want and all is good. There are 12 posts with unread messages that I didn't bother with.
I switch to my laptop at 14:30. The main page will show me the same threads with unread posts as I seen at 13:00 (plus whatever got posts in the mean time). If I click to go to a threads first new post, I land on the position I did the on the earlier occasion.
I never log out of the site on any device and this happens vice versa too.
Sweet. Good to see the place isn't being run by a petulant, reactionary dingbat again. I'm an actual adult - don't talk to me that way. Do the forum rules not apply to you? Is asking pertinent questions in a thread specifically devoted to the topic not ok?
I actually PM'd you (and a bunch of other mods) on the old place offering to help set the new site up prior to it going into terminal decline but only Kiko replied.
Thanks for the info.
Kudos to Mike, Baz, Phonics and you for sorting it out but it hasn't been clear who is doing what and, like Yev touched on the other day, it feels like people have been circumspect about answering that.
I'm sure people wouldn't mind chucking in a bit of cash to cover costs. They seem pretty manageable, from the info up thread.
Going from a board with an absent owner to one where it's not clear who is running the show and there's seemingly no plan on maintainability or upgradability of the existing (already outdated) software will inevitably lead to the same problem at some point down the line.
That's what I thought was happening. I'm not trying to give you grief for it, and I do appreciate you guys taking time to get something set up. I'd have been to happy to help, as would many others I'm sure. Right now it's hard to know who to suggest things to when it's unclear who is organising things and I get a reply like Phonics' one I quoted earlier, when I'm trying to ask some questions or make some legit observations. My actual irl job is to run a website, so I do have some idea of what I'm talking about.
As I posted earlier, from what I can see you can run the entire thing (forum software + hosting) for around a tenner a month plus occasional domain renewals. It would make sense to consider moving to that in the long-term. What we have now is fine, but it would be better to move to a more robust set-up at some point.
I shouldn't have spoken like that. I'd just woken up and after a couple of months trying alternate solutions to get the board to stay exactly where it was, with no success (not for lack of Staff trying), then several 4am finishes setting the place up. It got to me to see it described as a land grab, as if I've done anything to make this 'my forum' let alone Baz who despite paying asked for nothing in return. Apologies, again.
Thanks. It might not have been the best choice of phrase on my part, so no worries.
Like I said, I (and everyone posting) appreciate the work you guys have done to sort it out. I'm just trying to contribute some ideas of how things are and how they could be, but it's not been entirely clear who's able to make changes or what the current set-up was. It is now.
Happy to chip in with cash and/or effort, if required
Sorry mate. I had Morrison's no added sugar muesli for my breakfast, but it's not as nice as the Alpen stuff. But there wasn't much left so then I had to have two slices of wholemeal bread (toasted) with jam and butter (Lurpak) to make up. Then I had a bit of kip because I was tired from a pretty exhausting week at work, and then I felt refreshed so I got up and did a bit of work, and then I watched Seven Psychopaths which was pretty good but I've seen it before anyway. Then I watched You, Me and the Apocalypse and it was okay so I'll probably carry on watching again next week.
And then I logged on here.
you freak, Scouse.
I know nothing about the technicalities of these things but it feels uneasy knowing we've got another potential TD situation on our hands. Let's set up donations and get the proper software. We'd raise the money easily.
Thought you'd all like to see what this site look liked a few weeks ago when we first got started. If anything it's been downhill since...

I don't really get the moaning about the latest posts thing anyway. How difficult is it to just scroll down and know what you've already seen? I don't use that function at all.
Having to scroll through every thread to find where you last were is definitely a pain.
I wasn't having a dig at you, just at Scouse cause he's a gimp.
But: http://www.parentcenterhub.org/repository/web-reading/
People read down on the web.
Not a problem at all - more than happy to put my hand in my pocket when others have done the work to migrate us successfully.
Similarly, it's nice to see everyone making an effort.
We're closer to the TTH I first visited six years ago than at any other point since then in terms of activity and effort, albeit it's probably a more positive atmosphere.
I'll give some money if you sort one thing out.
I've never been able to do a narrow skin.
It's just so wrong seeing so much wasted space.
Go and buy a CRT gimps.
Don't accept Pepe's money. We saw what happened with HSBC and Mexican money laundering.
I'm in for any costs.
I'll chip in. We should use this.
I'd be happy to contribute of course.
We should make like all the admins get the credentials to the trustfund, or something.
Yev's an accountant, so one assumes he'd be trustworthy. Or Lee, given he has an actual job of responsibility.
I could as well, but I don't want the hassle.
It's probably easier to list who we can't trust. I'll start: Mahow.
Lol @ trusting an autistic continent hopper like GS.
I'd trust most people on here with it to be honest, but I think there needs to be several people involved as one of them could - as SvN pointed out - disappear for one reason or another, dramatic or not.
The last thing we want is another Mark-scenario.
At the end of the day, you're all struggling to give Baz some change.
I don't really mind who handles the money as even in the unlikely worst case scenario that they'll take the money and run everyone ends up losing a few quid.
Make it all voluntarily and throw a * in there saying that the donation doesn't give you any power or privileges on the board. I'm sure you could rack up enough money in one go to keep this place running for a few years. Even if we do go titis up during that time, the money is probably the least of anyones worries.
Also I'm loving the new the fact that we just had to migrate to Mali to become this online socialist utopia
