Two characters.
It's serving its purpose.
As good as the old one. Should have moved some time ago.
I think it's great. Looks better, works better, and generally seems to have made people post a little more. The mobile skin is a godsend too.
Pretty good. I like some of the new features. I think the skin isn't great though.
What GS said. I'm surprised everybody came over and continued bothering though. I thought a few people, especially some of the older ones, would have just called it a day.
Been quite impressed with Saint's English on this board so far, it has to be said.
You had more posts than me on the old board (and remember tens of thousands were wiped before you claim longevity), started miles more threads, was far more prone to going 'balls deep' in major events and staying online all night, and seemed to keep that Football Manager thread going all on your own. Don't let my dominance convince you otherwise.
He also shattered the duopoly last year. The people agree.
It's absolutely fine.
+1 for being surprised we didn't lose more though. Sincere is being an arse for no apparent reason and I'd be astonished if Taz isn't here shortly.
My day would be woefully boring at times without this to check.
I like it. Hope more people join.
I'm a fan. Not really been on this week, mind. Well, I haven't posted; I read it several times per day.
The look isn't quite as good, but SVN is apparently sorting that this weekend. Otherwise fine. The notifications means I can be an even lazier poster than before.
Pretty bummed there's been no 'wahey Baz is back' fanfare.
I'm a twit
Old TTH did have the stench of death about it.
I'm liking it so far. There are things which are a bit iffy (the compose box, the skin the bullshit notifications) but it's fine. Overall it's fine. Mobile support is nice.
I have reservations on:
1) The technology it's running on (why are we not using the latest version of vBulletin? Is it using the cloud-hosted solution?). It's just as insecure and open to security issues as before, albeit on a more stable host.
2) Why are we using pirated forum code? Who's paying for it all (Phonics? (A freelance/unemployed graphic designer?).
3) Why didn't we take the opportunity to get rid of some shitmunchers like Harold, Saint and Mert for good? They offer nothing of value and just serve to turn the place into some kind of Daily Mail/YouTube comments derivative
1) I've no idea
2) I'd love to know the answer to this too. The question seems to be routinely dodged so far.
3) Because the board would turn into even more of a mutual masturbation session than it's become over recent years and, quite frankly, fuck that.
It's fine, more functionality than the old places and it stays on it's feet for more a few days in a row (apart from that one time).
I'm posting more...
I don't think Taz will be back, he hinted at quitting posting on the old place.
I love it.
Prefer it massively over TD. Mostly because its reliable.
I have also come to love the skin.
I don't really think it's that easy to spend nigh on 15 years within a community, not to mention a brilliant one, and then just be able to leave it like that. Most of the people who leave us suddenly (Chaodck, Trips, etc) have only been here for a couple years.
I think this is place is great. I agree that the old place had the stink of death about it, whereas this place has the sweet scent of life. I've gotten used to the skin as well, and though there could be something better (especially if it could be more customizeable in terms of color) I'd have no problem with keeping it. The biggest remaining problem is the amount of people without avatars.
It's total shite and therefore perfect.
Yeah, I've spent over a decade on TD. I doubt I'd be able to just give it up.
I think the fact that most of us have moved over and carried on from where we left off has made it feel quite seamless. If we'd moved over and lost some of the better posters then I'd have also just threw the towel in, I imagine.
You've lost me, so that's reason enough to move back.
You answered number 1 with number 2, as far as I'm aware. It seems like we're running an older version (albeit not by that much) of vBulletin because it's pirated, and therefore didn't cost anything. You may or may not be aware that the latest version of vbulletin has been pirated/nulled but it is actively searched for and removed if discovered. The only way to get this forum running on the latest vbulletin would be to pay for a license.
The good news is not every penny has been pinched, and the server is paid for and was recently upgraded to allow 20gb bandwidth a month. More than enough for TTH, but better safe than sorry.
I'm waiting on phonics(/SvN?) to put some Google Adsense code on here so I'm not completely out of pocket but last I heard he said it wasn't a straight forward process and there were other things to iron out first.
Oh and your number 3 is terrible. Permanently banning someone from an Internet forum is pathetic, especially for "being shit," or something similar.
I'm a twit
It seems pretty damn sweet. Well done to whoever got @phonics going on setting things up
I don't mind donating.
How much would a license cost? The thought we could be taken down without warning leaves me slightly uneasy.
The 'view latest posts' option still hasn't been sorted and it's an important part of a messageboard. Other than that pretty good.
More reliable than the old board so I'm happy.
It's not cheap. I think (I might be wrong) you pay yearly too
Version 5
The skin's too light for me (the post boxes are fine but the area around them needs to be a darker grey to contrast). Otherwise though it's like we never moved.
.....
You can change the theme. The automatic light blue one was too bright and not easy on the eyes. The other theme with grey/dark blue is ace. Like Jimmy said it's as if we never moved.
Very 2001.
That still doesn't answer the question(s). So, I can extrapolate from that:
1) You've paid for the server space and Phonics/SVN are going to give you the revenue from Google Adsense ads on the site to pay for it
2) The forum software is pirated. This means that, over time, vulnerabilities will be discovered and open up potential security breaches (hence why you had all the spam/redirect ads on the old site, and fuck knows what else that went undetected).
If we're only using <20Gb bandwidth per month, you can get the absolute latest vBulletin v5 software (which is cloud-hosted, so doesn't require physical server rental) for £13.14 per month (or only £118.55 for the year (£9.88 p/a) if you pay up front).
I'd quite happily pay that myself, or I'm sure you could raise it within about 3 hours with a quick donation request from people on here. Then there's no need to bother fucking about with ad tracking shit or other nonsense.
My concern is that the decisions being made are opaque, and not being made with more rigour in terms of technical savviness or prioritising user benefits over making back costs. It feels like a land grab.
