My wife hates vinegar, so if we're sharing I have to forgo it.

I ordered an all day breakfast yesterday and they told me that after twelve they replace the toast and fried bread/hash browns with chips. It sounds interesting, but it turns out that it really doesn't work.

Shite when places do that. I'd take chips as an addition, not as a replacement to two key components.

I quite like chips on a breakfast, but I want the decision to be mine. And they are by no means a replacement for toast.

I skip the vinegar at a chippy because by the time I get home the chips are a soggy mess, plus they don't add enough.

Don't start, someone will be in here advocating putting the entire lot into a pie in a minute.

Its failings became apparent as soon as I bust the egg and it just flowed around the other items. They had also done that wanker thing of giving you the beans in a separate cup, no doubt because they knew that once you tipped them out the sauce had nowhere to go.

How do these places manage to get it so wrong? I bet they gave you half a disgusting runny tomato as well. Weatherspoons used to let me swap that for a sausage, but they will only let me have extra beans instead now.

I had already swapped the mushrooms and the tomato for more sausages, so that went a long way in their favour.

Love a fried tomato, can be doing with beans on a fry up though, totally unnecessary.

A fry up without beans is just too dry. I want every mouthful to contain at least some bean juice.

Nah how you're a deviant mate, you get the vinegar splashed on at the chippy then add extra at home. Although if you're having chips from a chippy without gravy you should be sent to the gulag.

They're essential, provided you have things to soak it up with. The chips just repelled it.

I tend to lean the other way, there are also certain things that the bean juice should never touch (the egg for instance) and it's not always possible to create a barrier with the bacon/sausage. Dryness is a factor but I find whatver sauce you have (HP for preference) ably fills that role.

Normal ones will do the job but if you're not building it yourself then it's a lottery.

Rosemary chips work well. A burger place near me does it and it makes them better. Especially served on a wooden board.

I know you're taking the piss, but on this topic: this pretty good burger place here in stockholm does some great chips that they actually put a bit of dill on, which I thought was going to be an aberration really when I saw it, but it actually tasted alright. Now, they didn't put that much which I think is pretty key.

Then again, I'm not sure why bother. So long as chips are cooked properly they taste nice, they don't need much more than being fryed the fuck outta and a load of salt.

Had a breakfast with chips today. They really are a cornerstone item.

2 bacon, 2 sausages (extremely low grade ones), black pudding, 2 eggs, beans, tomato, fried bread, toast, chips. Still feeling it now.

I think I've been to the same one Jimmy mentioned in Amsterdam if it's the place near the train station. The menu was just chips but about 50 different choices of sauce.

My local greasy spoon does a great breakfast.

2 bacon, 2 sausage (surprisingly decent), beans, 2 fried eggs, tomato/mushroom if you're a weirdo and the best toast I've ever had slathered in butter.

They're all great. The cheap nasty stuff has its place, similar to shit quality kebab meat, sometimes you just want that rather than the posh stuff. A 'proper' kebab after a night out isn't the same.
