Well our historic series whitewash of the Aussies is having the shine taken off it at Murrayfield today.

You would allow that South African try under Stevo's Momentum Rule (until you didn't), but I think niko has it.

Yet another shit crowd 'on the road'. I'm not one to say keep it all within sight of the M62, but they have three-hundred Super League games to take the game to London. You need to sell the internationals out otherwise the cunt NRL will use them as an excuse to stop bothering.

Our kicking game fucking hell. And people used to slag Kevin Sinfield off.

We arrived 5 mins after kickoff and there were still hundreds at the ticketing office waiting for tickets.

Aussies never looked in trouble. Easy game for them.

Worst bit was the food queue I lined up for at half time had run out of pies. Then the advertising boards teased me with Pukka Pie adverts.

It's pretty inconvenient for Northern fans as well, so that should probably be the end of that experiment. If you insist on having internationals in London then you might as well just book Wembley, fill half of it, and call it a big occasion.

Burgess would presumably have been sent off in a club game for that, but you can generally get away with punching people under international rules if they provoke you. Isn't that a much better system? He would it right in afterwards.

What was their verdict? My 2009 post referred to the in-game collapse, but some people here are actually after his job. I think the only thing you can criticise him for is the team being a bit more restricted than it needs to be (Australia will out-bore anybody), but even then he has only had a month with them, and it wasn't him out there missing touch with penalties and knocking on.

Have England ever done well in international league? When was the last time they dominated (certainly don't recall it in my lifetime).

He's got them playing well. Some people will complain about anything. Life I suppose.

On the subject of Eddie Jones, I did enjoy this:

Ben Youngs: the Leicester scrum-half was considered to be overweight, so Jones kept showing him bags of sweets

England/Great Britain (who we should play as) used to dominate the Australians in the black and white days, and then they were equals between the fifties and the late-seventies; but then they pulled away during the eighties for whatever reasons. Probably Wally Lewis and 'pokies'. The gap now is the narrowest I have seen it , but I don't know what people expect.

NZ / AUS have been dominant ever since I started caring about rubgy (mid 90's maybe?), I don't remember a time when we wouldn't have been considered underdogs. That probably goes for both codes apart from a brief period in the early 2000's.

No one will ever overtake New Zealand in union as long as any of us live. Similarly, in league surely it'll be difficult for us ever to compete because it's just bigger in Australia.

    2003 England union team?

League is definitely more popular in Australia, but they've got 24 million to your 53 million...

And I'll throw in another sly mention of us 4.5 million Kiwis...

That's the only side I ever watched and felt confident that we could beat anyone.

Population comparison doesn't really work, for reasons Jimmy is probably typing right now.

Aren't 'Ireland' now world champions and the greatest team ever to play union because they beat you in a friendly in America?

Cos you'd fucking think that was the case here for the past week.

There are more people in New South Wales and Queensland than there are in the league heartlands, and even there it comes a distant second to football. New Zealand punches well above its weight, but then all of its players go through the NRL system, so they're basically Australians.

League has well and truly invaded traditional Union schools which is hurting development a bit. When we get Western Australia up and running we should be able to close the gap a wee bit with the humble ones.

Edit: Union and League pick from the same pool of kids now.

Why? Ireland deserve to be celebrated as a great Rugby Union nation.

This current crop plus whatever else comes in are in my group of potential World Cup winners for 2019.

    Surf!

His family are moving with him so that should keep him out of trouble. I posted a while back that if he was still playing Union he would be the next superstar of Queensland rugby. 3/4's of the Churchie 1st XV that he played in were signed to NRL clubs before the end of the season.

The other clubs who were linked with him can't have had anywhere near that sort of money left under their salary caps (and even if they did, would somebody like Melbourne have valued him that highly?), so he must have been pretty close to switching codes if Newcastle had to offer him that much.

Newcastle have a shit tonne of room because no one established wants to go there atm.

The Brisbane rugby network would have thrown him cars, cash and a house if he came back here.

It should be interesting. If he's a bust then that was that, but if he flies within a couple of years then more teams (especially the less attractive teams) might start throwing money at the 'young blokes' instead of waiting for established players to mess them about, and then you will have the entire game going mental.

Just leave Rugby with enough scaps to compete is all I ask the mungos.

The one huge benifit is when the Union players come back they are a lot more developed physically and defensively so swings and round abouts I guess

He still looks pretty frail to me, which makes me think he won't be much use to Newcastle (over a full season at least) until he's about two million into the deal, since I'm struggling to think of any full-backs who killed it at twenty without having freakish physicality and/or blinding pace to blast through the learning curve. He's built more like Matt Moylan than Karmichael Hunt, and he can't have been playing first grade until he was twenty-two with his puny white body.

Darren Lockyer would be killed if he were to debut next year. Also hopeless under the high ball for a good few seasons if I remember.

Probably two good off seasons, the latest peptides and Joey in his ear and hopefully he will be QLD's no. 6 for a good period.
