Our cryptic ones are superior to any of the NYT's pathetic 'word games'. Got three on the Guardian one today, feel like Philip Roth.

Cryptic crosswords are the pits. You're just learning the bizarre logic of one particular weirdo. My mum and dad used to explain them to me sometimes and if anything know how they worked made it worse.

"Two little herons. Depressed, but can they crochet?"
"Ah, yes, clearly 'tennis' is the answer. Very clever."

    Fuck off.

Here's one I did earlier. 11 down on today's graun.

'Poet taking sweetheart round Spanish city (6)'

Ovid was a Greek poet. Ovid 'takes' the heart of the word 'sweet' (i.e. an e) and becomes Ovied. This is followed by something round (an O). Answer: Oviedo.

That one answer took me about 25 minutes. There are people who can rattle off two or three puzzles a day with 30 such clues each. Most of them are in the comments underneath giving it 'Polished that one off in about 12 minutes, pretty easy tbh'.

That logic would/could also apply to David Beckham though, so no problem.

Then you come out and say you regret doing it and urge others not to do the same up front. What you don't do is drag someone else through the mud and lie about shredding 10 grand in OUTRAGE while not mentioning that you've also sucked at the Qatari teat yourself.

Did Beckham actually do much promoting? Apart from the Joe Lycett thing I barely saw anything of him, Qatar should be getting their money back

And if David Beckham realises the error of his ways in 7 years time he moves into the hypocrite category? This is all such nonsense. Or what Spikey said.

EDIT: He doesn't even need to realise the error of his ways, or acknowledge them does he, he just needs to call someone else out.

There's probably a difference between an emerging comedian doing some gigs in a country and an already extremely wealthy and well known ex-footballer doing PR explicitly for that country.

I'm not an expert in nuance though so I don't know.

I have zero sympathy for David Beckham. He is indeed a scum bag for happily cashing in both from being a "gay icon" and from a state that would throw his gay fans from roof tops. That's neither here nor there.

Had he not dragged David Beckham in the way he did, then sure. There are countless ways he could have spoken out without also being a hypocrite.

Indeed. He could have said, I'm shredding the fee I received for doing it as I now realise the error of my ways, but that wouldn't have had as much gravitas as just outright calling him out, so he didn't and naively assumed no one would notice he'd also taken the Qatari cash.

In any case, given our lives and sporting institutions are absolutely riddled with middle eastern money I'm getting quite sick of all the Qatar bashing. The whole thing has been one massive exercise in virtue signalling (hate the phrase, but it's the best one available) and also continuously avoided the other elephant in the room, religion.

And this is nonsense. I've known for as long as I can remember that Middle Eastern countries have appalling human rights records and Muslim countries don't like gay people. If Gary Neville reiterating the point was part of him taking a stand then that's one thing, but when it's accompanied by him sucking the cash cock of BeIN Sports it's just ridiculous and, the Twitter bot is right, not something that should be anywhere near a UK footballing broadcast. Either do something actually meaningful, that has some, hell, even minimal, impact or stop lecturing people. The people who could actually change these things in Qatar do not care and certainly won't start caring if they have nothing to lose.

And on that note, if the armbands were raising awareness of something people didn't know about I'd be all for them, but as it is they accomplish nothing (just like taking the knee) and and and, our team and FA didn't even have the balls to wear them. Again, nothing here to make or even encourage Qatari's to change their stance.

As for the people fighting the good fight on Twitter in this country - It's just attempted regime change by social media and the one thing we know about regime change is, it doesn't work. People getting all flustered, banging on about the INJUSTICE of it all while Qatar just lols it off and continues with their backwards way of thinking and living.

It's pathetic and what's truly sad is there are many examples in history where our society and sporting institutions have taken a proper meaningful stand and good things have been accomplished. It would be nice if we did it again, that'd actually be caring, as opposed to pretending we do.

I mentioned before the World Cup that A LOT of people seemed absolutely petrified to say the word 'Islam' when referring to gay rights in Qatar - it seemed an obvious (intentional) blind spot.

It says everything about Muslim society that the counterpoint presented (including by you a few weeks back) was that Western countries restrict polygamy so who are they to talk about Islamic countries restricting homosexuality.

Yep - one might stand a chance of getting better conditions and pay for migrant workers in Qatar by raising awareness, but getting a Muslim country to embrace gay rights? Have you actually run mad.

The point is it's fine in those countries because they decided it was, they didn't make it so because some football people (I mean, fuck me, the hubris is off the charts), who were feeding from their trough in all manner of other way came along and told them it's not cool.

    "Oh, ok then".
