It was probably not a fair reflection of what happened, but I got the sense from the news report I saw on this last night that the crushees were staying on the pavement rather than spill onto a road that was being used by cars at the time, which sort of plays to that slavish adherence to rules narrative. I guess it was just a stampede type situation in a very confined space. And all for Halloween. It would be funny if it weren't an actual full-on tragedy.

I think Jonestown might be the single most bizarre thing ever to happen in relation to a western country. Every time I read about it I cannot believe that any of it happened, and relatively recently too.

To be honest the main thing I've taken from that case is that it's quite reassuring that the systems put in place actually work and don't bow to pressure.
